Fight the Empire

We live in an empire that began 500 years ago with the European conquest of the Americas. This program looks at how the empire permeates our lives.

What are we doing in the world? What are we doing to the world?

George Kennan was an influential US diplomat during the Cold War years. It was he who devised the containment strategy against the Soviet Union (as opposed to a more aggressive rollback policy). In February 1948 Kennan presented a document to President Truman, Presidential Policy Statement #23, which includes the following:

"The US has  50 percent of the world's wealth, but only 6.3 percent of its population. Our real task in the coming period is to devise a pattern of relationships which permits us to maintain this position of disparity...To do so we will have to dispense with all sentimentality and day-dreaming, and our attention will have to be concentrated everywhere on our immediate national objectives.

"We should cease to talk about vague and unreal objectives such as human rights, the raising of living standards, and democratization. The day is not far off when we are going to have to deal in straight power concepts. The less we are hampered by idealistic slogans the better."

Some have claimed that Kennan was speaking as a foreign policy "realist," and arguing against an ideological anti-Communist crusade. That may be so, but his words are clear, as Noam Chomsky has pointed out. The US intends to keep for itself an unfair share of the world's resources. The main difference between the realists and the ideologues is one of tactics in pursuing this ignoble goal.

Who Killed Marine Colonel Jim Sabow?

Who Killed Marine Colonel Jim Sabow? Host Per Fagereng speaks with the Colonel's brother Dr. David Sabow, who has been pursuing the case for over ten years.

Marine Colonel James Sabow's death was very controversial. In 1991 Sabow, a fighter pilot and a hero of the Vietnam War before becoming the third ranking officer at the Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, was found dead behind his home at the base, a shotgun blast to his head, blood splattered across the backyard.

Navy and Marine officials ruled the death a suicide. But Sabow’s younger brother David says evidence indicated murder. He says his brother was killed because of his knowledge of drug smuggling at El Toro and that the murder was covered up to protect others.

Host Per Fagereng interviews Gareth Porter, historian, investigative journalist and policy analyst on U.S. foreign and military policy.

Porter just wrote a piece titled "UN Fact-Finding Mission Says Israelis 'Executed' U.S. Citizen Furkan Dogan," which states: "The report of the fact-finding mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the Israeli attack on the Gaza flotilla released last week shows conclusively, for the first time, that U.S. citizen Furkan Dogan and five Turkish citizens were murdered execution-style by Israeli commandos.

"The report reveals that Dogan, the 19-year-old U.S. citizen of Turkish descent, was filming with a small video camera on the top deck of the Mavi Marmara when he was shot twice in the head, once in the back and in the left leg and foot and that he was shot in the face at point blank range while lying on the ground. ...
"Although the report's revelations and conclusions about the killing of Dogan and the five other victims were widely reported in the Turkish media last week, not a single story on the report ... appeared in U.S. news media." http://www.truth-out.org/un-fact-finding-mission-says-israelis-executed-us-citizen-furkan-dogan63609
