Voices on the Ground: Resistance and Resilience

Fri, 06/06/2014 (All day) - Sat, 06/07/2014 (All day)

The Social Welfare Action Alliance and the School of Social Work at PSU are pleased to announce our 4th Annual Community Based Conference on June 6th  & 7th entitled, “Voices on the Ground: Resistance & Resilience." Further, We are pleased to announce our keynote speaker, Cheri Honkala, a national activist in anti-poverty movements and co-founder of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union and the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights. Recently Cheri was the Vice Presidential candidate for the Green Party in the 2012 national elections.

This two-day conference was initially created as a way for PSU social work students, in the community based track, to learn from one another through dialogue about their work and to share their experiences and projects from the field. The conference has since expanded its goals to provide space for the larger community of activists and organizations to connect and engage students and the broader community, in an effort to build meaningful, collaborative relationships that will further the work.

The Social Welfare Action Alliance, SWAA, formerly known as the Bertha Capen Reynolds Society, is a national association of progressive social workers, social work students & faculty, and individuals affected by and committed to changing the current social systems. This society was founded in 1985 to honor the progressive and courageous work of Bertha Capen Reynolds, a premier author, educator and social activist of the mid-20th century. SWAA is committed to social, political and economic justice, and peace and alliance building with others working for fundamental change in existing class, racial and gender hierarchies.
