Empowering Renters with Comics

For millions of people across class, cultural, and generational divides, the comics form has proved an effective means for both instruction and empowerment.  So, when Portland's Community Alliance of Tenants needed a tool for teaching renters about their legal rights, they turned to cartoonist Becky Hawkins.  The new comic Know Your Rights: Don’t Get Evicted is illustrated by Becky and produced by CAT Executive Director Justin Buri along with a committee of local tenants and advisors.  Becky and Justin join us in the KBOO studios to talk about the project, in advance of a Comics Release Party this month that will include true stories from renters who stood up for their right to safe and secure housing.
