A conversation with Elizabeth Kolbert about the sixth mass extinction in our planet's history.
This is a rebroadcast of a program that originally aired on May 19, 2014

Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.

On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with writer Elizabeth Kolbert, whose new book The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History, explores how the culprit behind the extinction we are currently witnessing is us.

Elizabeth Kolbert is a staff writer at The New Yorker. Her stories for the magazine have included political profiles, book reviews, Comment pieces, and extensive writing on climate change. Her books include Field Notes from a Catastrophe and The Sixth Extinction.
