The book argues that the notion of the Internet as an unprecedented democratizing force, giving voice and power to those who previously had none, is vastly overblown; that the Internet in fact reflects and amplifies real-world inequities at least as much as it ameliorates them; that online, just as off-line, attention and influence largely accrue to those who already have plenty of both.
