City of PDX Launches "Healthy Streets" Program
When Willamette River fans found a beach littered with dirty syringes last summer, they put out a call to clean it up.
Officials there say local syringe exchange programs are doing a good job.
But some users choose not to participate for a range of reasons.
This month the Health Department and the City of Portland launched a 12-month pilot project called “Healthy Streets’’ to reduce the number of discarded syringes along the river in downtown Portland.
The program also includes targeted outreach to drug users and a public awareness campaign.
Multnomah County Health Officer Paul Lewis spoke with KBOO’s Lisa Loving about the new program.
The disposal bins are on the west waterfront under the Burnside Bridge and on the Eastbank Esplanade near Salmon Street.
