The Trial of environmental activist and violin teacher Brianna Waters began in Tacoma Washington yesterday.Waters is accused of acting as a lookout during a 2001 arson that caused seven million dollars worth of damage at the Urban Horticulture center at the University of Washington.

Former United Nations Chief Kofi Annan has announced that negotiations in Kenya have moved to a final stage today. The talks are aimed at ending the violence that has plagued Kenya since a disputed election was held on December 27th.Over 1000 people have been killed in the violence, most of them civilians.Nate Oetting is with the Portland-based group Mercy Corps, which has been working to bring humanitarian support to the region.

The U N will be holding a meeting with over forty leading institutional investors managing over 1.75 trillion dollars in assets to discuss the coming problems with climate change. Among them will be Oregon State Treasurer Randall Edwards. An outline for the investor commitments to be discussed at the summit was included in a news release sent out by the state treasurer’s office. Among the items was a commitment to requiring tougher scrutiny about carbon-intensive investments that may pose long-term financial risks.
While Democrats and Republicans gathered in Washington this weekend to caucus for one of the few remaining candidates for President, anti-authoritarians and activists also held a gathering.There, they began planning protests at both the Democratic and Republican conventions.
The Democratic convention will take place in Denver from August 24th to 28th.The Republican convention is planned for Minneapolis, September 1st to 4th.
