Fifty Oregonians joined thousands of activists from across the country to Take Back the Capitol this week in a campaign sponsored by the OCCUPY movement, Jobs with Justice, and the Service Employees International Union. Under the banner of "Good Jobs, Not Cuts. Extend Unemployment Benefits" the local contingent was organized by We Are Oregon, Oregon Action, and SEIU locals 49 and 503. KBOO reporter Jamie Partridge was in Washington DC Tuesday and has a word with one of the unemployed workers in the Portland contingent, Kimberly Bacon.
Two progressive advocacy groups, OSPIRG, the Oregon State Public Interest Research Group, and Environment Oregon, are experiencing labor strife. Today, outside the call center for the Fund for the Public Interest, at the Portland Telephone Outreach Project, where telephone workers fundraise for these two groups, union activists staged an informational picket. The Postmaster General has announced the imminent closure of 41 rural post offices in Oregon. The PMG claims the postal service must shrink due to its financial crisis, but he is restricted by law from closing post offices for "economic reasons". The Rural Organizing Project has stepped up to fight back. The Interntional Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) local 21 in Longview, Washington has put out the call to all working class people to come to Longview for an historic protest. EGT, a giant multi-natiional corporation which controls one-third of the world's grain trade, is trying to bust the ILWU, one of America's most progressive and powerful unions. EGT's first grain ship will be docking soon, escorted by the U.S. Coast Guard. Longshore workers in Longview, Washington are fighting an historic battle to save their union, the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) local 21. EGT, a huge multinational grain trading corporation, is trying to load the first ship at their new high tech terminal with non-ILWU scab labor. Since 1999 and the election of Hugo Chavez, Venezuelan workers have been creating a participatory democracy which they call “Socialism for the 21st Century”.
