The wars of occupation in Afghanistan and Iraq are producing a population of broken ex-soldiers US society is not equipped to deal with. In this conversation with the Old Mole's Bill Resnick, author and activist Tod Ensign details the many ways in which these wars drive troops over the edge physically and mentally. Ensign founded Citizen Soldier, and is the author of America's Military Today.
Legislation and rhetoric is "taking place in our House of Representatives, the media and many of the States across our country attacking the rights of women…from reproductive rights to voting rights to human rights." In other words, there is a war against women. United Against the War on Women has been founded to stand up to these attacks, and they are planning rallies and marches on the state capitols in all fifty states this Saturday, April 28. Angela Zehava, a local activist, talks about the issues and the action in this conversation with the Old Mole's Denise Morris.
This program takes its name, “the Old Mole,” from Marx’s image for the Revolution that works underground and suddenly emerges into daylight where least expected. The first revolution approaching what he had in mind was the October Revolution in Russia in 1917. In 1981, Warren Beatty produced, directed, and starred in a blockbuster movie Reds about the period. Our Movie Moles, Joe Clement and Jan Haaken see much to like in its portrayal of the period and the life of political commitment. The two main protagonists, John Reed and Louise Bryant, lived and met in Portland.
