Jerald Walker is an associate professor of English at Bridgewater State College. Married and the father of two young sons, he lives in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. His work has appeared in The Best American Essays (2007 and 2009), Best African American Essays (2009 and 2010), the anthology Brothers: 26 Stories of Love and Rivalry, The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Missouri Review, The Iowa Review, and Mother Jones, for which he profiled Chicago’s South Side.

Lies, damn lies and export statistics: A conversation about the impact of free trade agreements on our communities

President Obama recently announced plans to push through the Korea Free Trade Agreement immediately after the November election. This latest agreement is part of the president's stated goal of creating new jobs through a doubling of the nation's exports. Fair trade advocates say the Korea Free Trade Agreement is just more of the Bush-Clinton trade policy that has resulted in local job loss, erosion of environmental safeguards and the transfer of more wealth and power to Wall Street.

We interview a few representatives from the Fire Frashour Campaign. The campaign is calling for the dismissal of officer Ron Frashour, who fatally shot the unarmed Aaron Campbell in January, 2010. The campaign is also calling for the firing of any police officer involved in a fatal shooting.


The campaign calls specifically for:
“The firing of Officers Frashour, Humphreys, Walters and all other killer cops --including those responsible for the death of Keaton Otis; open contract negotiations between the City of Portland and the Portland Police Association; an end to mandatory arbitration in the Portland Police Association contract.”
