Black Book Talk
Air date:
Thu, 09/01/2011 - 11:30am - 12:00pm
Short Description:
Interview with author of "Black Gotham"

Part detective tale, part social and cultural narrative,Black Gotham is Carla Peterson's riveting account of her quest to reconstruct the lives of her nineteenth-century ancestors. As she shares their stories and those of their friends, neighbors, and business associates, she illuminates the greater history of African-American elites in New York City.

Black Gotham challenges many of the accepted "truths" about African-American history, including the assumption that the phrase "nineteenth-century black Americans" means enslaved people, that "New York state before the Civil War" refers to a place of freedom, and that a black elite did not exist until the twentieth century.

Movie Moles: "The Help"

Categories:
program date:
Mon, 08/29/2011

Movie Moles Frann Michel and Jan Haaken find some things to like but much to criticize in the very popular current film about black maids in the civil rights era South, The Help.  Among the critques they consider is this, from the Association of Black Women Historians: Despite efforts to market the book and the film as a progressive story of triumph over racial injustice, The Help distorts, ignores, and trivializes the experiences of black domestic workers. We are specifically concerned about the representations of black life and the lack of attention given to sexual harassment and civil rights activism.
