Happy New Year from the KBOO Evening News Team.  2008 marks KBOO's 40th anniversary, and in honor of the occasion, we've been digging through the KBOO archives, which are filled with recordings from KBOO's 40 years of radical radio.  Throughout the coming year, you will have the opportunity to hear more recordings from the KBOO archives, as we attempt to restore some of the older pieces from delicate reel-to-reel tapes.

And tonight, for the next hour, we'd like to present some excerpts of a few of these recordings.

Civil Resistance in Iraq

 Press coverage of Iraq tells us that  the US is trying to build a secular democracy there, when in fact democratic and  secular groups are most under attack by the US and its Suni and Shia allies.  Bill Weinberg, award-winning journalist, radioactivist, and producer at  Pacifica's WBAI in New York, talks with Laurie Mercier about civil resistance to the US occupation.   Weinberg maintains an on-line journal World  War 4 Report with links to more news about the non-religious democratic labor movements  in Iraq.

"Zapatista"

 Laurie Mercier and Luz María Gordillo review Zapatista, the play by Dañel  Malán about Subcomandante  Marcos  and the Zapatista insurgency in the Mexican state of Chiapas,  discussing, among other things, whether the Zapatistas are post-modernists.  Zapatista plays in a bi-lingual production through January 19 at Teatro Milagro here in Portland.   Follow the link for more information.

Bolivian Constitutional Reform

Bolivia is recovering from a violent weekend of protests in Sucre . 4 people were killed and hundreds were injured as groups protested a constitutional assembly being held to reform Bolivia’s founding document.

We produced Updates on some of the issues we covered last year. We talked with Claude Marks of the Freedom Archives about the San Francisco Eight case,  with Lisa Moore, assistant dean for multicultural affairs at Reed college about the Jena Six and Reed’s own noose incident , and to Eric Ward of the human rights organization Center for New Community about pending anti-immigration legislation, hate crimes, and the relationship between white nationalism and the anti-immigrant movement.  We also produces a short update about the ICE Raids, and other immigration issues.
