Michelle Alexander – Incarceration Nation (lecture)

Michelle Alexander is Associate Professor of Law at Ohio State University and author of "The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness." She is a civil rights lawyer, advocate, and legal scholar. As an associate professor of law at Stanford Law School, she directed the Civil Rights Clinics and pursued a research agenda focused on the intersection of race and criminal justice.

 Continuing the Left and the Law, Jan Haaken and Mike Snedecker talk about reactions to the release of 850 low-risk offenders from Oregon State Prisons. They talk about Govenor Kitzhaber's Public Safety Commission's recommendation, how the risk of these offenders is assessed, crime-victim advocates criticisms, and whether tinkering with the criminal justice system puts the public at risk. Mike offers suggestions to counter the fear of criminal justice reform leading to more crime.
