“Tillicum Wawa” is a Chinook Jargon phrase which, loosely translated, means “The people speak”.

Chinook Jargon was a trade language used by Natives in this region before Europeans arrived here. It was a combination of Salish, Nootka, and Chinook languages.  After explorers, traders, and other non-natives arrived in this area, French and English words were integrated into the jargon.  It was widely used to communicate between people of different tribes, nationalities, and races.

That is why we chose the name.  Tillicum Wawa is here to help represent the under-represented voice of the Native peoples of this nation. To be a “voice for the voiceless”.

If you’re listening, you’re part of the conversation.

Bryan Hudson, Jr. talks about his work to preserve the Shoshone language

It has been estimated that a language disappears every 14 days. When that happens, the key to cultural, historic, and spiritual values can die. As Yakama tribal elder Virginia Beavert, who helped preserve and protect the Sahaptin language said, "One day the government will come back and ask you two things 'Do you speak your language?' and 'Do you practice your religion?'. If we cannot answer "yes" to those two questions, our sovereignty is at stake."

The hosts of Tillicum Wawa are happy to be interviewing Bryan Hudson, Jr., who is working through the University of Utah to help preserve the Shoshone language on August 16. Tune in or stream to hear more about the importance of language preservation to First Nations peoples.

John T. Williams Memorial Totem Pole Project

program date:
Thu, 03/17/2011

Something so positive has come from an event so tragic. John T. Williams (left) was shot to death by Seattle Police Officer Ian Birk while walking down the street carving on August 30. Since then, Rick Williams (right), John T.'s brother, has started a memorial totem pole project in Seattle. Look at those wonderful faces will ya!

On Thursday, March 17, Tillicum Wawa: Voices of the People, interviewed Connie Sue Martin and Rick Williams about the case but mostly about the memorial project. The project has brought many people throughout the city together and many officials, such as the mayor, are in support of this project. This was an amazing interview and I was dumbfounded at how something so positive could come out of something so tragic.

Shusli suggested, that in the interest of cultural preservation which Tillicum Wawa is foucsed on in part, that I podcast this interview here. I have not listened to it yet myself, but in the interest of helping people remember that today's world is not the only world that has ever existed, here is the interview.
