The Underground

The KBOO Youth Collective was started to create and run The Underground — the public affairs show on youth issues. The Underground first aired on May 22, 2002, and has since covered a wide range of issues affecting American youth, including unconventional schools, leaving for college, punishment, science, activism, traveling, food, cabbots, and much much more. We have regular pieces from the Pulse of Portland Music Project, NAYA, and the IRCO Stem Program.

We also have a 2 hour youth music show, Youth Randomonium, which is a showcase for Portland's incredible local youth talent. We are on the air the 4th Friday of each month from 10pm to Midnight. Send us your recordings, and we'll play them!

We are looking for people under 21 who would like to get involved in youth community radio as Reporters, Board Operators, Talent Scouts, and more!

Email advocate@kboo.org or call Erin Yanke at (503) 231-8032 x221 to get involved!

The sooner young people become engaged as voters, the more likely they are
to vote the rest of their lives, not to mention become active and engaged
members of their community.

Democracy Cup brings civics straight into junior and senior classrooms,
lunch-hours, and school wide assemblies in order to meet young Oregonians where they are and get them set on the course to being lifelong citizen leaders.

program:
The Underground
program date:
Fri, 11/22/2013
New Avenues for Youth runs nonprofit businesses that provide employment training opportunities for homeless and at-risk youth. Our social purpose enterprises are a key vehicle for youth to develop the skills needed to obtain permanent employment, access post-secondary opportunities, and build a pathway to long-term success. The enterprises include two Ben & Jerry’s PartnerShops, and a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream catering and cart business.

Ben & Jerry's PSU and Ben & Jerry’s Pioneer Square scoop delicious Ben & Jerry’s ice cream for the people of downtown Portland. Every scoop you buy creates job opportunities for youth, so you’re making our community better, one sundae, shake, or fresh fruit smoothie at a time. AND, they cater!

Listen as Treasure talks with Dorian, Joe, and Matt tell us about Ben and Jerry's, New Avenues for Youth, and the social importance of job opportunities for at risk youth.
