Anna Tivel Live on KBOO

The Monday Sampler

Mon, 11/03/2014

Raised among the ferns and the farmland of Northern Washington, lyric-driven songwriter Anna Tivel loved words long before they became the backbone of her music. “My sister, my mom and I would go to our little town library with a rolling suitcase and fill it to bursting,” she remembers, “we read in the car, in the bath, under the covers late at night, always piles of books, always music playing, from Paul Simon to Dylan, from The Kingston Trio to Itzaak Perlman.”

Anna Tivel’s wide-eyed celestial folk songs belong in a similar ballpark with Anais Mitchell, Gregory Alan Isakov and Laura Veirs, where gentle picking plucks among occasionally unconventional sounds and a gorgeous voice tells stories of life in a world of natural wonders. The resulting music is incredibly honest, lyric-driven, and deeply affecting.

We talked about the performances, the audiences they have been having, as well as some obsevations about the original TV shows from back in the mid 1960s

The Mad Doctor was helping us out, but we didn't get the recording started until the interview had already started. As this opens we are talking about the look of some of the earliest episodes of the series.
