Comprised of the musical talents of Matt Madonna and Ryan Anderson, Love and Light hails from the high desert region of the Reno/Tahoe Basin. Creating music that touches their hearts and elevates their souls, the duo's goal is the uplifting of people across the world through melodic synth lines, complex chord structure, intricate rhythms, and funky, chunky bass lines. Though having a strong focus on midtempo bass music, their span of producing talents are limitless, crossing into the realms of melodic dubstep as well as half-time drum and bass and four-on-the-floor bangers. Whether it is sweaty club, a beautiful outdoor festival setting or enjoying a night at home in the lab, Love and Light music moves humans in a vibrant and deeply conscious way.

"The lyrical style is acrobatic and joyfully disjointed—think Aesop Rock meets Busta Rhymes—while the subject matter owes far more to the post-apocalyptic claustrophobia found on Funcrusher Plus than to the more ubiquitous ride-or-die ethos of The Chronic. In cinematic terms, it eschews the tragic braggadocio of Scarface for a universe that is decidedly Blade Runner in its subterranean futurism." - Ryan Feigh (Portland Mercury) http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/hive-mind/Content?oid=3300085

"It’s psychedelic rap, and in tandem with a pair of earbuds and Gavin Theory’s woozy, drum-’n’-bass-inspired beats, there’s enough here to trip you the fuck out." - Casey Jarman (Willamette Week)

Lucas Dix and Gavin Theory began their lives taught to be wary of each other's village's clan. Lucas Dix was born to the Claud Six people, green thumbed ground tillers of the sunny Eastern Valley, while Gavin Theory was born to the Mysterioso people, sky travelers of the shadowy Northern Slopes. The two villages had long been at odds because of their conflicting ideologies. The Mysteriosos were nocturnal beings who spent their time either tracking the movement of the stars or exploring space in meticulousy designed crafts of glass and metal, always eager to learn new things about the Universe and themselves. The little attention they paid to Earth was merely to hunt for sustenance or to collect materials to fuel further exploration. This directly clashed with the very pleasant and simple lifestyle of the Claud Six people, who woke early to reap, sew, and create from their numerous cultivated plants. Once their work was done, they would relax with each other and sip their fine ales, eat extravagant feasts, smoke their herbs and sing songs into the evening. The only real similarities between the neighboring cultures was that they shared a small lake as their only source of fresh water and both had a love for language and the spoken word. The Mysteriosos were renouned engaging storytellers and had become great at conversing with many different types of people on their adventures, while the Claud Six people were extremely open and understanding people who communicated all day to one another, and had gotten to know each other intimately. They were also well liked and trusted by all who talked to them.

THE MELTING POT's FEATURED ARTIST OF THE WEEK - FILASTINE

Grey Filastine is a producer/musician based in Barcelona but rarely
found there. Among his 60+ gigs last year you might have caught him at
a club in London, on a junk raft floating down the Mississippi, at
Shambhala festival in British Columbia, at a tiny breakcore party in
Osaka, or in front of forty thousand at the Boulevards festival in
Casablanca. In any context it gets riotous- Filastine bangs out his music,
jumping between a tangle of electronics, acoustic percussion, and an
amplified shopping cart, firing off riddims and synchronized live video.
In 2006 Filastine dropped his debut release, Burn It, to much critical
acclaim. Vibrant and original, Burn It made inroads among music fans
from the hiphop, world, electronic, and experimental scenes; it was
snatched up and re-released by French label Jarring Effects, Japanese
label Romz, and US anarcho-collective Crimethinc. Tracks from the
album received airplay on the radio shows of Mary Anne Hobbes & John
Peel, and in France peaked at #15 in national independent radio charts.
Less visible are the spins on pirate stations across Latin America, or the
more than fifty thousand downloads of his dj mix commissioned by
Blentwell.com.
Other releases include pirate mixtapes and a selection of sold-out vinyl.
Look for his latest 12" on Tigerbeat6's Shockout with partner Maga Bo
in their duo project Sonar Calibrado.
With his sophmore album, Dirty Bomb, Filastine returns with a gritty
transnational soundclash of urban rhythm. Freely splicing dubstep with
balkan brass or hiphop with bollywood, Dirty Bomb parties in the mud
puddle of our increasingly polluted world. Kick drums beat out rapid
patterns for dances yet to be invented. Rich acoustic strings merge with
programmed synths. Bits of field recordings and radio static degrade the
signal. Each featured voice is sourced from an on-site collaboration.
Over the contorted crunk of "Hungry Ghosts" rap aboriginal Australian
Wire mc and Japan's ECD, underground icons of their respective
countries. Closing the album is teen gypsy La Perla, recorded in a
squatted cave in Andalusia.
If it's otherworldly melodies with female vocals you want, try tracks 5
and 17. for low-end bangers enhanced by MCs, try tracks 7, 8, and 11.
For beautiful instrumentals, tracks 14 and 16.
Before focusing on solo work Filastine founded the Infernal Noise
Brigade, a 20-piece marching band that was the soundtrack of the
globalization protests that opened this century, starting with the
blockade of the Seattle WTO summit. The Infernal Noise Brigade was
purpose-built to bring music to political movements in the street.
Filastine is a project to do the reverse, pumping the immediacy of the
street through sound systems.
Filastine will spend 2009 touring the world along his DIY trade routes.
Expect to find him everywhere.

David Starfire blends different genres of music to create a unique sound that is catching the ears of music fans across the globe. A classically trained multi-instrumentalist/producer/composer/DJ who has lived in NYC, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He is signed to international label Six Degrees Records, home to artists such as Bebel Gilberto, The Orb, Cheb i Sabbah, Karsh Kale, Midival Punditz, Michael Franti, Guadi/Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, DJ Spooky and many others. The digital EP “Bombay Beatz” was released in November 2008 and is currently available digitally at all internet music retailers. The songs feature instruments and vocals from South Asia, Africa, Western cultures and merges hip-hop, breakbeat and rock to create an exciting new, eclectic sound.

David follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, Oscar Rouzan, who was a famous horn player in New Orleans and played with the likes of Paul Simon, Pete Fountain, Al Hirt and numerous other great artists. David started playing the guitar at 8 and by 17, he was composing, producing and recording songs in his bedroom on a 4-track and playing 5 instruments. He soon became enthralled with electronic music and gravitated towards computer music production using sampling and drum machines. By 19, David was in a signed band and touring the states with the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Filter and Skinny Puppy. After years of experimentation in his home studio, he mastered the art of mixing and recording electronic music and traditional instruments together. After a solo career and several bands later, David was part of the critically-acclaimed band, Cellophane Masses in San Francisco. Around that time, his interest shifted towards world music; he started studying artists from the Middle East and incorporating these rich, textured sounds into electronic music. This signature style landed David several DJ gigs along the West Coast and beyond.

In 2004, David became the first American “Breakbeat” DJ to complete a successful DJ club tour throughout India, bringing his unique sound of “Bhangra Breakbeat” to Bombay, Chennai, Goa and several other cities. He has since shared the bill with nearly every major DJ and has performed at large scale international festivals such as Coachella, Love Parade, Electric Picnic, Shambhala, Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle and Earthdance. Through his performances in the United States, Europe, Canada, Mexico, India and beyond, David has developed quite a following. Recently, David has added bass guitar and electronic hand drums to his live show, which all has been very well received. He has also collaborated with internationally known visual artrist VJ Culture for an amazing Audio/Visual experience called “StarCulture”.

David has songs on several CD compilations such as Lonely Planet, Red Bull, Craig’s List and more. He has songs featured on Sharon Kihara’s Bellydance Superstar DVD and Sera’s “East Coast Tribal” DVD. He’s written songs for video games and TV and cable programs such as ESPN2, Fox Sports, MTV, MTV2, Fuse, Showtime and HBO. He co-wrote and produced the 12” of the industrial dance song “Radiation”, which was featured on the national top 20 independent dance charts. Over the years, David has collaborated with FreQ Nasty, MC 900 Ft Jesus, Information Society, members of Beck, American Music Club and Wire Train.

David was interviewed on XM satellite station “The Move” (Channel 80) on the Thump Radio show and has produced 2 mixes for the show. His songs have been played on BBC1 Radio shows Bobby & Nihal, Friction, Paathan, Generasian as well as several other stations. Starfire Records, David’s personal record label, is on hiatus so that he can focus more on creating music. VIBESQUAD (Featured Artist) The Melting Pot 3-10-09 quot;Tune in Tuesdays from 8-10 pm @KBOO.FM online or 90.7fm in Portland. Melting Pot fuses elements of Electronica with traditional instruments and vocals from various cultures. It showcases Djs, Producers, and Artists from around the globe with a featured artist every week.": Music i got my 1st 45 single in 1980 & it was the Sugar Hill Gang’s "Rapper’s delight". i used to go crazy dancing around the living room to the b-side "Apache" (Jump ON it, Jump On it) I also liked big rock music like Rush & the Who (i was 9). I was deep into breakdancing in Junior high. The movies "beat street" & "breakin’" were huge in my world. Then i Joined Denver’s Future Jazz Project in 2001. I made a kids CD called "Kids Are Funky, Too" in 2002. In 2003 Zilla appeared out of thin air (long story), in 2006 we started Sporque w/ Ooah (Glitch Mob) & Jamie Janover. I played my 1st VibeSquad set at Symbiosis Gathering 2006 (30 minutes long right before the Zilla set), but 2007 wast the year that VibeSquad really got rollin: releasing ep’s "Return of the Pudding People" & "Songs to Accompany Dance Move: The Worm" on NativeSate and Proboscis & playing numerous live sets Colorado, Oregon, California, BC, Texas, & BlackRockCity.... 2008 is starting off with a bang! I listen to mostly electronic music these days (havent picked up my guitar in quite a while). I love making music with a computer.

Blow up my facebook if you want to.
"Sean Hankins" in Eugene

Craig Burk

It's Craig. I used to host a Sunday evening show and we met one time at the studio.I am interested in how you layer the sounds. I found some of the CDs on your 2/10 playlist on Amazon but now have to assume you were layering tracks. Curious about your playlist. On 2/10, I tuned in at about 9:30 and was very impressed despite my hither-to strong reservations about much electronica. You created a really a nice mix that was not dragged down by a too-obvious 4/4 beat. (I can't handle too much 4/4 on floor.) Will send my email address to you via your name since KBOO may not be OK with my posting it here.

Where is the playlist for 2/10/09

Where is your playlist for tonight. The last 30 minutes or so were pretty good and countered my belief that the beat stuff can be pretty much "you get the point after about two minutes."

GSAF Music

You have been *totally* killing it for the last twenty minutes. Thank you for the music.

Kick ass Beats J

Lovin your show!!!! Thanks for being a voice for our community!!! Peace, Tluv

I wanted to say I think you've got some pretty stellar jams being mixed and dropped on your show. I really enjoy when you blend different ethnic genre's, especially when the sitar is involved. Great stuff! Keep it coming.

Lovin the vibes

Hola. Hope your night is going beautifully. I sat down to watch Reefer Madness for the first time tonight, but I couldn't turn off your show! So....I watched the movie to your show rather con diálogo. Now it will keep me company as I further explore the odd sounds of an unidentified critter behind the dryer.
