Comprised of the musical talents of Matt Madonna and Ryan Anderson, Love and Light hails from the high desert region of the Reno/Tahoe Basin. Creating music that touches their hearts and elevates their souls, the duo's goal is the uplifting of people across the world through melodic synth lines, complex chord structure, intricate rhythms, and funky, chunky bass lines. Though having a strong focus on midtempo bass music, their span of producing talents are limitless, crossing into the realms of melodic dubstep as well as half-time drum and bass and four-on-the-floor bangers. Whether it is sweaty club, a beautiful outdoor festival setting or enjoying a night at home in the lab, Love and Light music moves humans in a vibrant and deeply conscious way.

"The lyrical style is acrobatic and joyfully disjointed—think Aesop Rock meets Busta Rhymes—while the subject matter owes far more to the post-apocalyptic claustrophobia found on Funcrusher Plus than to the more ubiquitous ride-or-die ethos of The Chronic. In cinematic terms, it eschews the tragic braggadocio of Scarface for a universe that is decidedly Blade Runner in its subterranean futurism." - Ryan Feigh (Portland Mercury) http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/hive-mind/Content?oid=3300085

"It’s psychedelic rap, and in tandem with a pair of earbuds and Gavin Theory’s woozy, drum-’n’-bass-inspired beats, there’s enough here to trip you the fuck out." - Casey Jarman (Willamette Week)

Lucas Dix and Gavin Theory began their lives taught to be wary of each other's village's clan. Lucas Dix was born to the Claud Six people, green thumbed ground tillers of the sunny Eastern Valley, while Gavin Theory was born to the Mysterioso people, sky travelers of the shadowy Northern Slopes. The two villages had long been at odds because of their conflicting ideologies. The Mysteriosos were nocturnal beings who spent their time either tracking the movement of the stars or exploring space in meticulousy designed crafts of glass and metal, always eager to learn new things about the Universe and themselves. The little attention they paid to Earth was merely to hunt for sustenance or to collect materials to fuel further exploration. This directly clashed with the very pleasant and simple lifestyle of the Claud Six people, who woke early to reap, sew, and create from their numerous cultivated plants. Once their work was done, they would relax with each other and sip their fine ales, eat extravagant feasts, smoke their herbs and sing songs into the evening. The only real similarities between the neighboring cultures was that they shared a small lake as their only source of fresh water and both had a love for language and the spoken word. The Mysteriosos were renouned engaging storytellers and had become great at conversing with many different types of people on their adventures, while the Claud Six people were extremely open and understanding people who communicated all day to one another, and had gotten to know each other intimately. They were also well liked and trusted by all who talked to them.

PRETTY LIGHTS - featured artist - 10-13-09

Pretty Lights is the musical vision of the ultra-versatile Colorado based producer Derek Vincent Smith, accompanied in the live setting by drummer, Cory Eberhard. Together these two achieve a raw energy rarely reached in the realm of electronic music. At a time when music lovers from almost all subcultures and genres are finding common ground in the basic form of bangin' beats, Pretty Lights is giving the people what they want; electro organic cutting-edge party rocking beats that fill venues with energy and emotion and send dance floors into frenzies.  What makes Pretty Lights truly different though, is that these beats have serious soul.  Derek's latest album, "Filling Up The City Skies" is a two-disc, 26 track journey through past, present, and future. He juxtaposes collages of beautiful vintage samples against backdrops of futuristic synthesis and dirty broken beats, creating a sound that can snap your neck while simultaneously shedding your tears.  The album has been downloaded over 150,000 times from the Pretty Lights website in the short 9 months since its release, proving that the Pretty Lights sound is not only getting around, it's spreading like a virus.

ashville, TN, August 20, 200 Pretty Lights, Colorado’s ultra-versatile producer, Derek Vincent Smith with drummer Cory Eberhard, is back with a bang, kicking off a fall tour that encompasses all of the U.S., beginning at the end of this month, August 29th in Richmond, VA at The National. Fresh off their summer tour which included stops at Electric Daisy Carnival, Bonnaroo, High Sierra Music Festival, Rothbury Music Festival, Forecastle Festival, Camp Bisco, 10K Lakes Festival, and a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Pretty Lights is ready to get back in front of their fans this fall with stops including the Symbiosis Gathering and a headlining slot at Trinumeral Festival. Accompanying the raw intensity of Pretty Lights’ live performance this fall, will be a dose of cutting edge lighting and LED technology that will push optical boundaries over the edge.

Pretty Lights will be touring this fall in conjunction with the release of the new album Passing By Behind Your Eyes (Pretty Lights Music). The album, set for release October 6, is the first album of brand new material since 2008’s two-disk Filling Up The City Skies and begins yet another remarkable new chapter in this producer’s  career.

With more than 150,000 downloads of disk Filling Up The City Skies online in the past 9 months, Pretty Lights continues to juxtapose a collage of beautiful vintage samples against backdrops of futuristic synthesis and dirty broken beats, creating a sound that can snap your neck while simultaneously shedding your tears. At a time when music lovers from almost all subcultures and genres are finding common ground in the basic form of banging beats, Pretty Lights is giving the people what they want; electro organic cutting-edge party rocking beats that fill venues with energy and emotion and send dance floors into frenzies.  The group’s spectacular live shows, filled with powerful beats, have become synonymous with their name and they are becoming an institution in the touring industry as they continue to fill venues nationwide.           THE MELTING POT - Featured artist 10/06/09 - WAX TAILOR

Fueled by the energy of relentless touring he has written his third and best album to date “In the Mood for Life”. Written in both Paris and New York City, this necromancer of forgotten melodies is able to blend Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop, and 60’s Pop Music into a 52 minute journey.

Wax Tailor masters the art of reinventing oneself, and although his signature sound is immediately identifiable, a style oft compared to melancholic melodies reminiscent of The Cocteau Twins blended with a delicate balance of Hip-Hop seldom seen these days, this new album establishes a true evolution both in terms of production and song writing. String instruments, which were once just extras, now assume a more prominent role (”Dry Your Eyes”,” Go Without Me”), and where genres once crossed path from one track to another, they now collide within a track (”This Train”, “Fireflies”). The resulting sound is denser, more organic and the song writing more finely chiseled.

With the opening notes, the mood sets the stage. Wax Tailor is now the conductor of melodies, the director of an aural movie whose urban roots meet the perfect casting. Throughout this album, he appropriates a multitude of references with a very personal touch. His music is beyond genres and defies categorization, it is a modern brand of pop music, designed with a rigor and an expertise that betrays the love this artist puts into his craft.

His first album “Tales of the Forgotten Melodies” drew comparisons to the likes of RJD2, Portishead and DJ Shadow, while his second “Hope & Sorrow” (80 000 sold worldwide) landed him a nomination at the prestigious Victoires de la Musiques, as well as the US Indie Awards. Wax Tailor is coming off a year which saw him tour relentlessly (over 200 concerts) and score the title track for the movie “Paris” by Cedric Klapisch as well as a few remixes (Nina Simone, ASA). He is now a well-established and respected producer. Written in both Paris and New York City, his third album “In the Mood for Life” is an organic landscape with orchestral accents. Taking its cues from Soul, Funk, Hip-Hop or 60’s Pop Music, this is one eagerly awaited 52 minute journey. IN THE MOOD FOR LIFE Who else than this necromancer of forgotten melodies can assemble such a wide array of influences and make them coexist with such ease? On Wax Tailor album melancholic melodies reminiscent of The Cocteau Twins strike a delicate balance with a brand of Hip-Hop seldom seen since the days of Jurassic 5. Wax Tailor also masters the art of reinventing oneself, and although his signature sound is immediately identifiable, this new album establishes a true evolution both in terms of production and song writing. Sting instruments, which were once just extras, now assume a more prominent role (Dry Your Eyes, Go Without Me). Where genres once crossed path from one track to another, they now collide within a track (This Train, Fireflies). The resulting sound is denser, more organic as well (Leave It, I Own You…) and the song writing more finely chiseled. With the opening notes, the mood sets the stage. Wax Tailor is now a sound stager, the director of an aural movie whose urban roots meet the perfect casting. Throughout this album, he appropriates a multitude of references with a very personal touch. His music is beyond genres and defies categorization, it is a modern brand of Pop music, designed with a rigor and an expertise that betrays the love this artist puts into his craft. Guests of the album in order of apparition: Charlotte Savary – the muse whose voice dresses WT’s music with melancholic echoes. Speech Defect – the raw energy of the Beastie Boys allied with the flow of Jurassic 5. They are the kings of Scandinavian hip-hop and come here to celebrate sampled music. Sara Genn – following a chance encounter in New York City, WT wrote this title with his friend Marina Quaisse especially to match her voice. No doubt such talent will soon resonate outside of her home city. Mattic – the charismatic MC who joins WT on stage has been there since the first album. On this record he brings all the energy and mastery of a mature rapper. Dionne Charles – The Brighton Diva, one of the great voices of English soul comes for a tribute to the sound of Motown. Voice & Ali Harter – the incongruous meeting of the Louisiana MC and of one of Folk music’s best kept secrets delivers a vintage and organic single that crosses genres. ASM – the English collective were one of the highlights of WT’s last album. They come back on a track whose groove is pure delight. Charlie Winston – shares with WT a taste for hats and a love of Soul. “I Own You” is the illegitimate lovechild of those two universes. JC’s stage name, Wax Tailor, originated in 2004 with the release of his EP “Lost The Way.” He subsequently released his first full-length album, “Tales Of The Forgotten Melodies,” completely on his own. The album garnered critical acclaim and love from French music fans and became one of the best selling electronic releases of the year. His next move was to take his show live, with a four-piece band, and find a way to translate the cinematic feel of his music through the use of video. Building on the solid foundation in France, Wax Tailor licensed “Tales” to Decon in 2006 for North American distribution and continued touring across the globe, opening up for the likes of Aceyalone & RJD2. In 2007, in addition to the release of his sophomore effort, “Hope & Sorrow,” WT & his musiciens made a worldwide tour of a 100 shows. They’ll be on the road again this year for a new tour, check the schedule !

DJ VADIM - Featured Artist 9-22-09

DJ Vadim - Biography Hardest working man in show business? Trouper? Tireless? The John Coltrane of hip hop. However you want to put it, be sure of one thing, when DJ Vadim first heard the phrase "Don’t sleep” he obviously took it literally.

Founder of the label Jazz Fudge(1994), A&R, record collector, and in-house producer of Latin Grammy nominees,7 Notas 7 Colorez/ mucho muchacho, Vadim has certainly been keeping himself busy. And that’s before we even mention his DJing which has seen him tour, all over the world with the likes of Atmosphere, PE, Ghostface killah, Method Man, Redman, STS9, Kraftwerk,Fat Freddys Drop, Roni SIze... Playing at some of the worlds biggest most prestigious festivals like Glastonbury, Fuji rock , Roskilde, Exit, Big Chill, Burning Man..... Add to this his countless remixes from the like of Stevie Wonder, Al Green. Prince, The Cure, DJ Krush, Morcheeba, Talib Kweli, Gus Gus... and mix cd’s - ‘architects of the great’(97),‘lettuce proppelled rockets’(05), ‘ live in brooklyn’(07). Though maybe described by some as an ‘underground artist’, Vadim has caught the attention of the corporate world too, producing music for Absolut vodka, Nokia, Sin city and MTV.... To describe the man as an musicholic almost seems to sell him short.

The story begins in 1992. Vadim bought a sampler and started working on the music that would become Abstract hallucinating Gases and Headz ain't ready(95). His first 2 releases. Later in the year he signed to Ninja Tune which culminated in his debut LP USSR Repertoire(1996) From these early recordings came a remix LP USSR Reconstruction(1997). In 1999 came the collaboration LP of The Isolationist produced by vadim, and vocalised by anti pop consortium.

Controvesy struck with the album USSR: Life from the other side (1999). The LP featured Co Flow, Iriscience(from dilated peoples) amongst others and caused quite a storm in USA with the track ‘your revolution’ featuring Def Jam poetess Sarah Jones. This song was banned by the FCC in the USA for explicit and provocative lyrics. The album also featured the underground classic “the terroist’ which was also banned.

To promote that LP, Vadim put together - The Russian Percussion - consisting of Mr thing(turntables), killer kela(beat box), Blu rum 13(mc), John Ellis(Keyboards - Cinematic Ochestra) and Yarah Bravo. This was to become the catalyst andinspiration for future work to come(one self)

The Art of listening(2002)

"…Listening” has all of the angular abstractions of Vadim’s earlier work, but here it is combined with a new depth of musicality, a love of bass and an interest in music and words from around the world. So, alongside UK MCs like Taskforce and Phi Life Cipher and the cream of US underground wordspitters like Slug, Gift of Gab, Moshun Man and Vakill can be found Polish jazz legend Urzula Dudziak, Super Furry Animals, and Brazilian Swedish mistress of poetic innovation Yarah Bravo.

ONE SELF - children of possibility(2005)

After the success of the russian percussion tours, it was only natural to create an album with cohorts Yarah Bravo and Blu rum 13.Organic hip hop soul. ‘Cosmopolitan, diverse, colourful, real, loud and definitely not middle of the road’ - the source THe album featured two of the most popular Vadim produced tracks to date - ‘Be your Own’, ‘Bluebird’. Both heavily supported by radio

The Sound Catcher(2007)

Not content with working harder than all 7 dwarfs put together, he transplanted himself and his 'timber yard studio' to Brooklyn New York in early 2006 where most of the latest LP was written and produced. Unpredictable with touches of disco and tubby-esque dub moments, varied with brushes of soul, hip hop and downtempo. The album featured the underground soul classic - ‘Black is the night’ featuring Kathrin de Boer

U can’t lurn imaginashun(2009)

Improving with age is not limited to fine wine. The latest instalment is proof that things seem to just keep sounding better and better. For an artist with such a long recording pedigree it would be easy to sit in cruise control, re hash earlier ideas... This however isn’t Vadim. The latest offering is more electronic than previous, more defined, refined but yet retaining its soul boombap prowess.

new ish?(2009 - )

productions for spitter’s Wretch 32 , Kyza , kingpin, Foreign Beggars, Bunzen, Yarah Bravo. Paco Mendoza, Heidi Vogel..... Absolute Vodka, NOKIA. Remixes for the likes of Alice Russell, Jill Scott, Kidkanevil, Mr Day, Roy Ayres, nextmen..... And lastly the new group, Butterfish Black

Blow up my facebook if you want to.
"Sean Hankins" in Eugene

Craig Burk

It's Craig. I used to host a Sunday evening show and we met one time at the studio.I am interested in how you layer the sounds. I found some of the CDs on your 2/10 playlist on Amazon but now have to assume you were layering tracks. Curious about your playlist. On 2/10, I tuned in at about 9:30 and was very impressed despite my hither-to strong reservations about much electronica. You created a really a nice mix that was not dragged down by a too-obvious 4/4 beat. (I can't handle too much 4/4 on floor.) Will send my email address to you via your name since KBOO may not be OK with my posting it here.

Where is the playlist for 2/10/09

Where is your playlist for tonight. The last 30 minutes or so were pretty good and countered my belief that the beat stuff can be pretty much "you get the point after about two minutes."

GSAF Music

You have been *totally* killing it for the last twenty minutes. Thank you for the music.

Kick ass Beats J
