Love & Light Interview on THE MELTING POT 3/15/2011
Comprised of the musical talents of Matt Madonna and Ryan Anderson, Love and Light hails from the high desert region of the Reno/Tahoe Basin. Creating music that touches their hearts and elevates their souls, the duo's goal is the uplifting of people across the world through melodic synth lines, complex chord structure, intricate rhythms, and funky, chunky bass lines. Though having a strong focus on midtempo bass music, their span of producing talents are limitless, crossing into the realms of melodic dubstep as well as half-time drum and bass and four-on-the-floor bangers. Whether it is sweaty club, a beautiful outdoor festival setting or enjoying a night at home in the lab, Love and Light music moves humans in a vibrant and deeply conscious way.

Hives Inquiry Squad 1.11.11 on THE MELTING POT Radio show -Tuesdays 8-10pm(pst) @www.KBOO.fm/listen
"The lyrical style is acrobatic and joyfully disjointed—think Aesop Rock meets Busta Rhymes—while the subject matter owes far more to the post-apocalyptic claustrophobia found on Funcrusher Plus than to the more ubiquitous ride-or-die ethos of The Chronic. In cinematic terms, it eschews the tragic braggadocio of Scarface for a universe that is decidedly Blade Runner in its subterranean futurism." - Ryan Feigh (Portland Mercury) http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/hive-mind/Content?oid=3300085
"It’s psychedelic rap, and in tandem with a pair of earbuds and Gavin Theory’s woozy, drum-’n’-bass-inspired beats, there’s enough here to trip you the fuck out." - Casey Jarman (Willamette Week)
Lucas Dix and Gavin Theory began their lives taught to be wary of each other's village's clan. Lucas Dix was born to the Claud Six people, green thumbed ground tillers of the sunny Eastern Valley, while Gavin Theory was born to the Mysterioso people, sky travelers of the shadowy Northern Slopes. The two villages had long been at odds because of their conflicting ideologies. The Mysteriosos were nocturnal beings who spent their time either tracking the movement of the stars or exploring space in meticulousy designed crafts of glass and metal, always eager to learn new things about the Universe and themselves. The little attention they paid to Earth was merely to hunt for sustenance or to collect materials to fuel further exploration. This directly clashed with the very pleasant and simple lifestyle of the Claud Six people, who woke early to reap, sew, and create from their numerous cultivated plants. Once their work was done, they would relax with each other and sip their fine ales, eat extravagant feasts, smoke their herbs and sing songs into the evening. The only real similarities between the neighboring cultures was that they shared a small lake as their only source of fresh water and both had a love for language and the spoken word. The Mysteriosos were renouned engaging storytellers and had become great at conversing with many different types of people on their adventures, while the Claud Six people were extremely open and understanding people who communicated all day to one another, and had gotten to know each other intimately. They were also well liked and trusted by all who talked to them.

Eliot Lipp didn’t choose to become one of the most looked to artists in contemporary electronic music, but somehow, Lipp’s sound, one that uses vintage gear to create a unique take on Hip Hop and House, has quickly garnered the respect among the industry’s most influential musicians and producers as well as the deep admiration among audiences worldwide.
Since being discovered by Scott Herren (aka Prefuse 73) in the mid 2000’s, and releasing albums on the cutting edge labels Eastern Developments, Mush and Hefty as well as backing the hype with a relentless touring schedule of influential live shows all over the globe, Lipp has quickly become one of the barometers for the revival of electronic music in the States.
Originally hailing from Tacoma, WA, Lipp paid his dues in the underground scenes of almost every primary market in the US, Europe and Asia, including stints in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago before dropping roots in the Brooklyn scene that has continued to produce some of the most recognized artists in contemporary indie and electronic music.
Lipp’s signature sound, a crossbreed of 90’s Hip Hop and House, 70’s Funk fusion as well as classic Electro, has and will continue to breakdown barriers and transpose trendy scenes. Whether programming Hip Hop beats, writing dirty basslines, collaborating with the likes of premier producers, DJs, MCs and musicians, examined by SPIN, URB, Pitchfork and other media or playing popping parties at clubs and festivals worldwide, Eliot Lipp will continue to do his part in revolutionizing electronic music.ler soundtrack. They are a bit darker and more minimal than my usual beats. click the image to listen.

VibeSquad is the multi-personality brainchild of Aaron Holstein. With releases on NativeState, Proboscis, Interchill, Muti, and Sonic Dragon (Hong Kong) in 2007 alone VibeSquad is quickly emerging as a top producer in the west coast US electronic music scene. Both 2007 EPs "Return of The Pudding People" & "Songs to Accompany Dance Move: The Worm" have been making there way around the globe showing up in DJ’s sets and causing serious mayhem on dancefloors. Though his legendary live sets may cause whiplash and heart attacks in the unsuspecting bystander, those prepared to launch get much more than they bargained for. Aaron’s music defies typical genre-labels and covers tempos from slow ’n hard lowriding krunkadelics to mid-tempo barnstormers all in a seamlessly flowing soulful mash- dirty and beautiful as life itself. Aaron also plays bass/keys for the bands ZILLA (w/ Michael Travis & Jamie Janover) & SPORQUE (w/Ooah & Jamie Janover)
i got my 1st 45 single in 1980 & it was the Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s delight”. i used to go crazy dancing around the living room to the b-side “Apache” (Jump ON it, Jump On it) I also liked big rock music like Rush & the Who (i was 9). I was deep into breakdancing in Junior high. The movies “beat street” & “breakin’” were huge in my world. I couldn’t convince my parents to buy me technics 1200’s and a mixer for my 12th birthday, but i did hook up my sister’s and my whole stereosystems next to each other so that i could scratch (read: ruin) a mint worth of classic vinyl. i got like $300 worth of gift cirtificates to a dance music record store for my bar mitzvah (no joke) so i bought a couple crates of some serious classics (i was living in Evanston, Il right outside of Chicago and house/electro/techno and underground hiphop were burgeoning styles). i had original pressings of Al-Naafish (the original electro tune in my book) Art of Noise’s “Into Battle” (”beatbox”, “moments in love” – this shit directly formed my musical sensibilities) Kraftwerk’s “Tour De France” (i still start poppin just hearing the breath soundz and those chirpy hihats- that shit IS breakdance music) i had slick rick n doug e fresh “ladidadi” memorized the week that tune came out. we would go to dances at the YMCA and the DJs (who were like the 14 year old younger brothers of some serious Chitown DJS) would play all of these jams with no regard for genre/style it was all underground dance music. i remember that Shannon track “let the music play” had the sickest “double pump” kick drum pattern that i couldnt get enough of….. “AEIOU”, herbie’s “Rockit”….And yes i sold all of that shit except for “into battle” and “ladidadi”. I really miss that al-naafish (”ITS TIME”)… but i was finished with puberty and then it was New Wave/Goth music nonstop (Bauhaus, Skinny Puppy, front 242, New Order, The Cure, The Smiths, Ministry, Souxsie, 4AD, WaxTRax, man i was all over it- i saw them all live and yes i wore a black trenchcoat and eyeliner), my friends & i had a goth band called “charge, recoil, and swoon” and we would drink coffee and smoke cigarettes and have a shitload of fun being depressed. Then i discovered , um, “psychedelic excursionising” and in comes the psychedelic rock (grateful dead, pink floyd, led zep) then Reggae/Dub/n a heavy dose of ol skool funk (P/F & Ohio Playerz & Zapp, etc..) this was around 1986.
In 1989 it was off to college in Massachussetts right as Phish was emerging as the new deal in east coast psy-jam culture. Then it was all about Jazz for a few years. i studied w/ saxophonist/composer Yusef Lateef and played jazz guitar for 8 hourz per day. then i discovered samplers! Joined a band called Boogie Shoes from Chicago and toured for 3 years straight (95-97) playin hiphop/live band flava (like the beasties w/ a funk band) until that wore out. Then i dropped out of music for a couple of years…
Then i Joined Denver’s Future Jazz Project in 2001. I made a kids CD called “Kids Are Funky, Too” in 2002. In 2003 Zilla appeared out of thin air (long story), in 2006 we started Sporque w/ Ooah (Glitch Mob) & Jamie Janover. I played my 1st VibeSquad set at Symbiosis Gathering 2006 (30 minutes long right before the Zilla set), but 2007 wast the year that VibeSquad really got rollin: releasing ep’s “Return of the Pudding People” & “Songs to Accompany Dance Move: The Worm” on NativeSate and Proboscis & playing numerous live sets Colorado, Oregon, California, BC, Texas, & BlackRockCity…. 2008 is starting off with a bang!
I listen to mostly electronic music these days (havent picked up my guitar in quite a while). I love making music with a computer.
i like so many artists that it is silly to make a list. my friends are my biggest musical heroes these days. i listen to lots of idm/downtempo/dubstep/electro/glitchhop/breakbeat/ but these genre names are getting silly already ;) lets just say i LOVE BASS & ill beats in all of their glorious formz.
i am dedicated to making music that vibrates POSITIVITY, LOVE, and LIGHT… w/ ridiculous amounts of BASS & a nasty-ass beat of course ;)

Originally formed for a one-shot performance during Vancouver’s Celtic Fest in March of 2006, word of their foot stomping, high energy live set started to spread, and the project took on a life of its own. Since then, D2D has been busy gigging constantly, touring Eastern Canada and California, playing some of Canada’s largest festivals (including the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, Shambhala, Salmon Arm Roots and Blues) as well as being invited to open the massive Canada Day celebrations for 40,000 people on Parliament Hill in Ottawa in 2007. They’ve shared the bill with names like De La Soul, Cheb i Sabbah, and Metric, and have found a cult following in many of the West Coast’s smaller communities and towns. Their debut album “Delhi 2 Dublin” reached #3 on the Canadian Chart Attack world music charts; their new Remix album reached #1 and receives consistent airplay from Japan to Eastern Europe to the UK.
D2D is now getting ready for a busy summer of touring; they’ll be hitting festivals like Sunfest (London), Hillside (Guelph), the Regina Folk Festival, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the North County Fair (AB), Faerieworlds (Eugene), The Big time Out (Cumberland), Shambhala (Nelson) and some other big surprises that they can’t share quite yet…
They are also currently recording their first music video with their friend and director Michael Mann.

The Melting Pot on 03/16/10
For almost a decade, Signal Path’s mission has been to push the boundaries of electronic music in the performance setting. As one of the pioneers of their genre, Signal Path has influenced countless artists across the country, been downloaded by tens of thousands of loyal fans nationwide, played almost every major US festival, and has gained international recognition for their live shows.
In the next phase of Signal Path, and almost two years since their last major tour, fans find the band producing a sound that has become more mature, authoritative, and immense. While still blending both live instrumentation and computer generated production, Signal Path is creating some of the most progressive music in their history. Originally a duo, Signal Path comes full circle with Ryan Burnett producing and playing guitar and Damon Metzner on the acoustic drums. This configuration allows the sound to become focused, spontaneous, and rich.
With a new record made available to their fans absolutely free through their website www.signalpathmusic.com, The Path is back, updated, and will be coming to a city near you. Check back soon for added tour dates, show info, news, or to just download the free album! Peace! -sp

Tune into KBOO this Tuesday night 3/2/10 for a live performance by GRAINTABLE. Hes been lighting up the Westcoast with his blend of electronic superfudge. Catch up with him about the new Chip Chop release, a few Portland shows and find out what goes on in the mind of the sonic scientist. It all starts at 8pm on Portlands own 90.7fm KBOO.
Emerging on the experimental electronic music scene in 2008, Graintable is quickly making a name for himself with melodically mutated hip hop beats and bass heavy bangers. Busting out MPC-style sample bashing live sets, Graintable creates heavy grooves laden with high energy sound scapes that will keep repeating in your head for days. Graintable released his first track on RUNRIOT’s Motion Sickness compilation in ‘09 and is currently working on more synthed out brain stomping tracks to rip through portable music boxes and dance floors in 2010.

"This guy is throwin together some real ill head-nod musak for yas. Glitch Hop, Turbo Crunk, Street Bass, whatever you like to call it, the instrumentals coming from this guy is straight G so you might wanna light a spliff for these." - Bwomp Beats
"Jams that make you get down like some future sweaty tribal shaman. No lyrics to help connect to people, no special gimmicks, just some of the best music I’ve heard." - Renegade Mag
"A must for any glitch hop fans, not necessarily those seeking pure dancefloor bangers (though listening to the mix you will definitely have your share of head swinging), but those appreciating the quality of music coming from this eclectic scene full of creativity and raw energy." - Doktor Krank
"He's carving out a nice niche for himself in Portland, OR, and we see big things for him in the future. He rocks that CrUnkBAssGlITch sound, but it's his own brand, a little slowed down, and frankly way more our speed than a lot of the fools doing this right now." - The Beat Register

TURNTABLES ON THE HUDSON
Pledge Drive Special
We will be focusing on TOTH releases and artists too many to name. World Music for the next genreation featuring Originals, Remixes, and Collaborations from across the globe.
"TEN YEARS FLOATING DOWN THE HUDSON... For the tens of thousands of people that have journeyed to piers, boats and clubs during that time—not to mention the global audience they have acquired—a real transformation occurs. Whatever you bring inside is, during the course of hours of an organic, electronic hypnosis, turned into something shared by everyone around you. This is why the party has lasted, will last much longer: it is a community free of judgments and restrictions. With so many influences behind Turntables on the Hudson, it’s easy to see why everyone feels at home. In a place where any music that moves you is not only welcomed but encouraged, there’s room for everyone. That’s part of the magic—that’s the heart of the magic. It is political in that no one is excluded; it is social in that lasting bonds are constantly formed..."
Since 1998, Turntables on the Hudson consists primarily of DJs Nickodemus & Mariano + percussionist Nappy G. Alongside a big family of musicians and DJs, special outdoor/ indoor venues & party people ready to move, they have brought the vibe all over NYC and dancefloors across the U.S., Asia, Europe, Australia and Latin America. Building a loyal following one dancer at a time, they have made a commitment to moving people's bodies while at the same time, opening their minds and exposing them to artists & sounds from every part of the World. The parties are are every Friday in the Spring & Summer, and on a monthly basis in the Fall & Winter. Please check back for our various locations throughout the city and our tour schedule. Turntables on the Hudson has SEVEN volumes of Music that were made by members of the crew & from friends here and abroad. Artists such as Zeb, Nickodemus, Mariano, Nappy G, Quantic, Sabo, Local 12, Marzebian, Jean Shepherd, Jay Rogriguez & Groove Collective are frequent contributors to the TOTH sound!
When Nickodemus and Mariano started the Turntables on the Hudson (TOTH) parties in 1998 it was one of the first late night outdoor events in NYC. With the addition of Groove Collective founding member Nappy G on percussion, the party became an adventurous, young, free-spirited community known for its eclectic musical blend. In the past ten years TOTH took their beats from parking garages, lofts & boats to residencies at renowned NY clubs and venues like The Frying Pan, Opaline, Shelter, The Brooklyn Loft, Cielo, Element, Hiro Ballroom, SOB's and Spiegelworld. After ten years, the TOTH parties are now taking place Fridays at the Water Taxi Beach in Long Island City overlooking Manhattan and the East River. TOTHís music policy has always been maximum funk and absolute fun. One can easily hear home-born genres like hip-hop, funk, house and soul played back to back with Latin, Afrobeat and Eastern European gypsy sounds. In addition to hosting live guests in the past including Brazilian Girls, Antibalas, Tortured Soul and Los Amigos Invisibles, the crew has also fused live musicianship into their sets. The heavy percussive element has been highlighted with West African percussion ensembles, live samba batucada bands and New Orleans & Eastern Brass bands. Top-shelf DJs that joined them on deck over the past decade including Louie Vega,DJ Spinna, Rich Medina, DJ Smash, Mr. Scruff, Rainer Truby, Peter Kruder, Quantic and Mark Rae, among dozens of others. 2008 marks the 10th anniversary of funky-fresh Turntables parties. TOTH will celebrate ten years of music, dance and culture with an all-star lineup of DJs at the Water Taxi Beach every Friday starting May. Get ready to dance to the sounds of Colombia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Africa, Balkans, Arabia in a funky house, hip-hop, salsa, swinging boogie style. Additionally, there will be many more events in town including a club shows, showcases and other one-offs. | |||||||||||||||||||

Craig Burk
It's Craig. I used to host a Sunday evening show and we met one time at the studio.I am interested in how you layer the sounds. I found some of the CDs on your 2/10 playlist on Amazon but now have to assume you were layering tracks. Curious about your playlist. On 2/10, I tuned in at about 9:30 and was very impressed despite my hither-to strong reservations about much electronica. You created a really a nice mix that was not dragged down by a too-obvious 4/4 beat. (I can't handle too much 4/4 on floor.) Will send my email address to you via your name since KBOO may not be OK with my posting it here.
Where is the playlist for 2/10/09
Where is your playlist for tonight. The last 30 minutes or so were pretty good and countered my belief that the beat stuff can be pretty much "you get the point after about two minutes."
GSAF Music
You have been *totally* killing it for the last twenty minutes. Thank you for the music.
