Nightmares on Wax is an institution, albeit a delightfully different one. The man behind the moniker, George Evelyn, just keeps reinventing – not in a wilful Bowie way, but flowing along, going at whatever speed he fancies to wherever his ideas carry him. For the last seven years he’s lived in an Ibizan farmhouse and, while he’s Warp Records’ longest serving artist – “the granddaddy,” as he puts it – he overwhelmingly focuses on his current projects, letting them revitalize his music.

Short Description:
This weeks featured artist GRAMATIK

Gramatik has always been an early adopter. It began at the age of 3, when his mother would catch him glued to the radio in his older sister’s room, checking out the cassette tapes with American funk, jazz, soul and blues. He started making his first beats on an early PC by the time he was 13, and soon the kid from Portoroz, Slovenia figured out how to harvest the power of free file sharing to build a following throughout the US & Europe. Tracks spread, hype grew, tours followed, and before long his digital persona forged the initial inroads into the US market, landing him both a label and an agency. Gramatik landed on US soil as a fully formed artist who knows how to do things his way.

Comprised of the musical talents of Matt Madonna and Ryan Anderson, Love and Light hails from the high desert region of the Reno/Tahoe Basin. Creating music that touches their hearts and elevates their souls, the duo's goal is the uplifting of people across the world through melodic synth lines, complex chord structure, intricate rhythms, and funky, chunky bass lines. Though having a strong focus on midtempo bass music, their span of producing talents are limitless, crossing into the realms of melodic dubstep as well as half-time drum and bass and four-on-the-floor bangers. Whether it is sweaty club, a beautiful outdoor festival setting or enjoying a night at home in the lab, Love and Light music moves humans in a vibrant and deeply conscious way.

"The lyrical style is acrobatic and joyfully disjointed—think Aesop Rock meets Busta Rhymes—while the subject matter owes far more to the post-apocalyptic claustrophobia found on Funcrusher Plus than to the more ubiquitous ride-or-die ethos of The Chronic. In cinematic terms, it eschews the tragic braggadocio of Scarface for a universe that is decidedly Blade Runner in its subterranean futurism." - Ryan Feigh (Portland Mercury) http://www.portlandmercury.com/portland/hive-mind/Content?oid=3300085

"It’s psychedelic rap, and in tandem with a pair of earbuds and Gavin Theory’s woozy, drum-’n’-bass-inspired beats, there’s enough here to trip you the fuck out." - Casey Jarman (Willamette Week)

Lucas Dix and Gavin Theory began their lives taught to be wary of each other's village's clan. Lucas Dix was born to the Claud Six people, green thumbed ground tillers of the sunny Eastern Valley, while Gavin Theory was born to the Mysterioso people, sky travelers of the shadowy Northern Slopes. The two villages had long been at odds because of their conflicting ideologies. The Mysteriosos were nocturnal beings who spent their time either tracking the movement of the stars or exploring space in meticulousy designed crafts of glass and metal, always eager to learn new things about the Universe and themselves. The little attention they paid to Earth was merely to hunt for sustenance or to collect materials to fuel further exploration. This directly clashed with the very pleasant and simple lifestyle of the Claud Six people, who woke early to reap, sew, and create from their numerous cultivated plants. Once their work was done, they would relax with each other and sip their fine ales, eat extravagant feasts, smoke their herbs and sing songs into the evening. The only real similarities between the neighboring cultures was that they shared a small lake as their only source of fresh water and both had a love for language and the spoken word. The Mysteriosos were renouned engaging storytellers and had become great at conversing with many different types of people on their adventures, while the Claud Six people were extremely open and understanding people who communicated all day to one another, and had gotten to know each other intimately. They were also well liked and trusted by all who talked to them.

THE MELTING POT 8/17/10 Featured Artist - ZION I - Tune in tonight 8-10pm(PST) for an exclusive interview with AMP LIVE from Zion I - on Dr.J's "THE MELTING POT" 90.7fm in Portland Or, Online @www.KBOO.fm/listen

Zion I is a hip hop duo from Oakland, California. The duo consists of producer (& DJ), Amplive, and Mc Zumbi. The group is known to its followers for Amp’s futuristic production techniques, using a mix of live instrumentation and samples, and Zumbi’s positive and socially conscious lyrics. Zion I debuted in 1997 with the locally distributed cassette-only EP Enter the Woods. Their first single on Indie label Ground Control Records (“Inner Light”) paved the way for an album deal and in 2000, they released the critically acclaimed Mind Over Matter. In total, they have released six studio albums, 2000’s Mind Over Matter, 2003’s Deep Water Slang V2.0, 2005’s True & Livin’, 2006’s Break a Dawn (a Japan exclusive), also in 2006 a collaborative album with The Grouch, Heroes in the City of Dope, and 2009’s The Take Over.

Ten years after the release of their debut single, Oakland hip-hop duo Zion I return with The Takeover, a filler-free new mix of jabs, roundhouses and uppercuts that continue their streak as one of hip-hop’s most diverse groups.

For Takeover, which features guest spots by Houston legend Devin the Dude, UK emcee Ty and Rhymesayers’ Brother Ali, producer AmpLive and emcee Zumbi incorporate the best parts of their live show—perfected through nonstop touring—and bring that vibe to the studio.

“Zion I has a reputation of being very spiritual and serious,” notes Zumbi. “I think The Takeover is a lot more fun than our past records. We still touch on serious subject matter, but this album shows the other sides of our personality.”

Over the course of five LPs and numerous EPs and mixtapes, the group has proven to be a welcome enigma in hip-hop. Lyrically, Zumbi runs the gamut on a range of issues both serious and frivolous, discussing problems and pleasures both spiritual and worldly. Throughout, his fanbase keeps coming back for his smooth delivery and ability to raise issues without sounding didactic. Musically, Amp draws from both the usual (funk, soul) and esoteric (house, drum n bass) to create soundscapes that work as well on an electronic music mixtape as it does hip-hop. An accomplished remixer as well, Amp has remixed everyone from Linkin Park to MGMT, and most recently released Rainydayz Remixes based on Radiohead’s In Rainbows. Every production and remix, though, always brings it back to his main job in Zion I. “I started using way more effects on this album,” says Amp. “So I was able to bring in more elements that I’ve been using for some of the dance and indie rock stuff.”

Despite living a few miles from each other, technology facilitated the making of Takeover, as the duo would e-mail verses and beats back and forth, with each member continually making notes and suggestions on both parts of the song. This fully collaborative effort ensured that both Amp and Zumbi would have a say in the final product during the entire production process. “Our songs go through many different styles and iterations,” admits Amp. ““Caged Bird,” for example went from an Electro R&B joint to a drum n bass track to its current version [as a soul-inflected, string-laden beat].”

While the final work is still Zumbi and Amplive, the two are quick to point out how their writing process has changed this time out.  “We have an inner core of people who we let listen to the album in different stages and got feedback on what they liked,” says Zumbi. “On other albums, it was generally us just making whatever we wanted and then they’d just say what songs they like. Our skin is thick enough and we’re honest enough with ourselves that we can take criticism.”

This new method of recording was essential to the finished product, but the group always has a definite idea in mind, looking at their tracks as fans as much as musicians. “We try to make music that falls into a crack and fills a void for us as fans of music,” says Zumbi. “We discuss what we want the album to feel like and then we just let the unconsciousness take over and let things go. We just allow that process to take on its own life.”

From the electro-rap homage “DJ DJ” to the spacey futuristic synths of “Antenna,” The Takeover encapsulates the diversity and versatility that have made Zion I Bay Area stalwarts for over a decade. As with any Zion I album, there’ll never be any compromise away from deep thought, but as anyone who’s seen the pair live knows, that means nothing if the crowd ain’t entertained.

One listen to the album, and you’ll know The Takeover may be the most appropriate title of the year.

Short Description:
FEATURED ARTIST ~ BLOCKHEAD: Interview, Live Mix, & More

Blockhead grew up in downtown New York City. The son of an artist, early on he found his passion was for music. A fan of a whole range of sounds, especially hip-hop, Blockhead steadily built a tremendous collection of tapes and later CDs from innumerable artists. After a brief stint as a rapper, he realized his calling was behind the boards and not on the mic, and from there he began to produce beats.

Since making that decision, he's been kept pretty busy. Blockhead produced 9 tracks on Aesop Rock's critically acclaimed album Labor Days. Additionally he produced half the tracks on Aesop's follow up EP, Daylight. Blockhead has also been working with other indie giants such as Slug of Atmosphere, Murs, Mike Ladd and SA Smash. He also found time to complete a break beat album entitled Blockhead's Broke Beats, with 10 hard hitting instrumental tracks, which was released on Mush Records, the US home of cLOUDDEAD. And just to prove that he ain't all about art-rap, Blockhead produced 2 tracks on the newly crowned Skribble Jam Battle Champ, MacLethal's full-length album. Oh, and the guy does comedy, too. He's a member of the Party Fun Action Committee who's hip-hop/comedy debut album was recently released on the legendary Def Jux. And what was the other thing? Oh yeah, exquisite, emotional instrumental hip hop on the one and only Ninja Tune…

Dr. J,
Hey, met you at the home on the hill where Leo stays. We had a great time and played your mixes for our brunch party on Sunday. Thanks again.
Blow up my facebook if you want to.
"Sean Hankins" in Eugene

Craig Burk

It's Craig. I used to host a Sunday evening show and we met one time at the studio.I am interested in how you layer the sounds. I found some of the CDs on your 2/10 playlist on Amazon but now have to assume you were layering tracks. Curious about your playlist. On 2/10, I tuned in at about 9:30 and was very impressed despite my hither-to strong reservations about much electronica. You created a really a nice mix that was not dragged down by a too-obvious 4/4 beat. (I can't handle too much 4/4 on floor.) Will send my email address to you via your name since KBOO may not be OK with my posting it here.

Where is the playlist for 2/10/09

Where is your playlist for tonight. The last 30 minutes or so were pretty good and countered my belief that the beat stuff can be pretty much "you get the point after about two minutes."

GSAF Music

You have been *totally* killing it for the last twenty minutes. Thank you for the music.

Kick ass Beats J

Lovin your show!!!! Thanks for being a voice for our community!!! Peace, Tluv
