The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 02/02/10

Air date:
Tue, 02/02/2010 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
With Joe on vacation, Abe takes on the warm, fuzzy, not-at-all divisive issue of abortion.

It's clear that the issue of abortion elicits a visceral reaction from certain members of the political right, in a way that few other issues do. The reason why is perhaps less clear than it might appear. On the surface, it is framed by abortion opponents as a question of the right of a human to not be murdered. Dig a little deeper though, and you find a fear of sexuality and sex -- particularly female sexualty, and the choice of young women to have sex on their own terms.

Two events, one in the recent past and one in the near future -- the  conviction of Scott Roeder, murderer of Dr. George Tiller, and the airing of a controversial ad during this weekend's Super Bowl -- prompt Abe to take a closer look at the debate around this most contentious of issues.

If you think that corporate America has done a good job so far of hijacking the levers of political power, wait till we see the full effects of last week's disastrous Supreme Court ruling. The Court has effectively removed any and all barriers to corporate political spending.

Until now, corporations were limited to spending the money they were able to raise from management and employees -- money that was freely handed over for the purpose of political spending.

Short Description:
Abe and Joe take a brief tour through the bloody history of Haiti, and discuss the obligations that

The calamity in Haiti has made one thing abundantly clear -- when a nation has been at the business end of colonialism for centuries, it's that much more difficult to react when disaster strikes. And when, like Haiti, a nation has the temerity to aspire to self-government by people of African descent, the disparity is even more striking.

Abe and Joe take a brief tour through the bloody history of Haiti, and discuss the obligations that the developed world has -- or should have -- toward the undeveloped world.

Sooner or later, it had to happen. A terrorist attack would take place on President Obama's watch, and the wingnuts would bleat about his response to the End of the World as We Know It. As it happens, the attack consisted of a kid trying -- unsuccessfully -- to set his underpants on fire. Confronted with the reality of terrorism, the president -- appropriately -- responded cooly and logically.

Unfortunately, the Right seems to believe that his response to terrorism should be, well, terror. Rather than keeping his head, apparently the American people would be better served by Obama the Angry Father.

Chuck Sheketoff joins Abe and Joe to discuss Measures 66 & 67

With the January special election looming, the Oregon Center for Public Policy's Chuck Sheketoff returns to dissect Measures 66 & 67. The two ballot referenda address the unfashionable, outmoded, and vaguely socialist notion that wealthy people should pay more taxes in exchange for, well, the privilege of being wealthy.

I know, right? Like that'll ever catch on.

Tue, 12/08/2009 - 8:00am - 9:00am

As the Copenhagen talks begin, Abe and Joe talk climate change.

As the Copenhagen climate conference gets under way, the lack of commitment from the United States to taking any concrete steps toward abating climate change looms large. To mark the momentous tasks ahead, 56 newspapers from 45 countries took the unprecedented step of publishing a "world editorial" calling on the developed world to do what must be done to reverse the ravages of the industrial age. With editorial in hand, Abe and Joe talk to listeners about steps both large and small that can be taken to address climate change.

Let's look back on a good couple of weeks for women.

program date:
Tue, 02/07/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor.

It's been a good couple of weeks for women. First, there was the ruling that nonprofitsmust cover contraception in their employees' health plans, even if doing so runs counter to church doctrine. Then there was the stunning betrayal -- and equally stunning reversal -- by the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Both were victories for the notion of women as full human beings, and, crucially, both were won in the court of public opinion.

Also, it's fund-raising time. Open yer wallets in the name of our fair sisters, y'all.

The slipshod cleanup effort at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington state.

program date:
Tue, 01/31/2012

Right here in the Columbia Basin, we have our very own atomic wasteland. The Hanford nuclear site in Washington state is a festering Cold War sore, and the multibillion-dollar cleanup effort is underfunded and poorly run. Abe and Joe discuss a blockbuster article on the dubious attempt to remedy the sins of our fathers.

Interestingly, we have a Nuclear Power Plant Builder down in Corvallis.  Thier Marketing Literature says it's totally safe, but it doesn't address the issue of Nuclear Waste, or what to do with Spent Fuel.

There will be an Anti-Hanford Protest in Ridgeland, WA on April 15, 2012.

Abe and Joe discuss SOPA and the future of online censorship.

program date:
Tue, 01/24/2012

For now, it seems, the Internet will remain the radical experiment in free information exchange that we have come to know and love. Abe and Joe dissect the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and discuss the future of online censorship.

Plus -- an update on the time-honored practice of racist "dog whistles" in conservative circles.

Abe and Joe marvel at "Beyond Vietnam," one of MLK's greatest speeches.

program date:
Tue, 01/17/2012

Great oratory speaks to universal and self-evident human truths, and thus remains timeless. Nearly 45 years on, Abe and Joe revisit "Beyond Vietnam," one of Dr. Martin Luther King's most powerful and prescient speeches. In it, he expresses the concept that the movements against poverty, racism and militarism are all facets of humanity's inexorable struggle toward justice and enlightenment.

Do we really have a choice? Abe sizes up the 2012 presidential election.

program date:
Tue, 01/10/2012

 Hosted by Abe Proctor

It's the mating call of the Naderites: there's no difference between the Democrats and Republicans. They're both corporate parties; the only difference lies in how far right-of-center they lie.

But there is a difference. It's not as stark as most progressives might like, but it's there, and it makes itself felt over time. That's why, as frustrated and as impatient as we might be, we've got to pay attention. With Joe away, Abe looks at the quadrennial liberal presidential dilemma.
