Air date:
Tue, 10/22/2013 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Fall Membership Drive continues as Abe and Joe discuss the GOP's great capitulation.
In case you missed it: the attempt by a rogue neo-Confederate faction in the Republican Party to destroy the Affordable Care Act (along with the faith and credit of the United States) failed utterly. The ACA may be a clunky boon to the insurance industry, but it's better than what we had before. At least it lives to fight another day. Abe and Joe take your calls. Plus -- it's the Fall Membership Drive!

Government shutdown

Air date:
Tue, 10/08/2013 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Abe and Joe sift through the myriad reasons behind the gov't shutdown.
Is the U.S. a functioning democracy? Good question. Our government has shut down over the issue of Obamacare. On the one hand, the shutdown is a matter of economic power -- as the New York Times reports, the shutdown has some very rich, very well-connected backers. On the other hand, the fight over the Affordable Care Act could be described as the latest battle of the Civil War. Abe and Joe try to untie this peculiarly American knot.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership: corporatism gone wild.
The Trans-Pacific Partnership: corporatism gone wild.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership, now under negotiation, would be the latest chapter in the ongoing transition away from nation-states -- and toward multinational corporations -- as the ultimate repositories of political and economic power. The agreement, if ratified, would undermine the United States' ability to enforce environmental, health, and labor regulations, further weaken our protections against surveillance, deregulate banks, and -- perhaps most importantly -- put corporations outside the reach of legal remedy.

BPA and Risks to Public Health
BPA and Risks to Public Health

Joe Uris hosts a discussion of BPA and a lack of regulation in the U.S.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical that has been present in many hard plastic bottles and metal-based food and beverage cans since the 1960s.

BPA exhibits hormone-like properties at high dosage levels that raise concern about its suitability in consumer products and food containers where exposure is orders of magnitude lower.  A 2010 report from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) identified possible hazards to fetuses, infants, and young children.
