Voter ID

Air date:
Tue, 11/05/2013 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Voter ID laws are ensuring that only the "right" people get to vote.
This past summer, the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act -- and shortly thereafter, new discriminatory "voter ID" laws began to spring up, mostly in the Old South. Now in Texas, a new voter ID law has disenfranchised thousands of women for the crime of having taken a married name. Voter ID, it seems, is the latest in a long line of efforts to ensure that only the "right" people get to vote.

The Fracas between the NAACP and the Teabaggers

Categories:
program date:
Tue, 07/20/2010

Hosted by: Abe Proctor and  Joe Uris

With Joe on vacation, Abe checks in on the fracas between the NAACP and the Teabaggers.

This just in: some members of the Tea Party movement have said racist things in public, and displayed racist slogans and images at public events. This is apparently completely acceptable in conservative circles. What's not acceptable, it seems, is pointing out the public racism when it happens.

dustup between the NAACP and the Tea Party movement throws the racist streak in modern conservatism into stark, ugly relief. It's the next chapter in a sordid tale that predates our Republic. But the good news? The Tea Party's visible virulence is proof that things are getting better.

Who needs facts when you've got opinions?

Categories:
program date:
Tue, 07/13/2010

Hosted by: Abe Proctor; (Joe Uris is on Vacation.)

Facts? Don't bother me with the facts. An article from the Boston Globe discusses the ramifications of a University of Michigan study which shows that reality has very little bearing on one's deeply held opinions, whether right or wrong. In fact (so to speak), the study suggests a perverse tendency to cling even more tightly to one's beliefs whenever reality proves to be inconvenient.

With Joe on vacation, Abe probes the murky waters where faith and fact overlap.

Bike-Based Entrepreneurs tell us about pedaling one’s goods on the street. Literally.

program date:
Tue, 07/06/2010

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  (Joe Uris is still on Vacation.)

Sol PopsSoupCycle and B-Line Sustainable Urban Delivery are all Portland-based small businesses driven by a common factor: bicycles. But what’s it like to depend on human-powered transportation for your livelihood? It’s a sustainable, intimate and decidedly local form of commerce, sure, but one imagines that Januaries are likely to be extra long.

Noah Cable, Aaron Harmon and Danielle Koppel of Sol Pops, along with Jed Lazar of SoupCycle and Franklin Jones of B-Line, join Abe in studio to discuss doing business from atop a bicycle.

This just in: up is down, in is out and black is white -- as long as you're a Republican.

With Joe on vacation, Abe checks in on the rampant denial, duplicity and hypocrisy that constitute the conservative psyche. As President Obama's Supreme Court nominee is vetted before the Senate, we learn from the GOP why Thurgood Marshall's civil rights crusade was so dangerous: he was a "judicial activist."

We also learn from our conservative brethren that the pressing American economic problem isn't unemployment, it's the deficit. So it's perfectly acceptable -- damn near required, even -- to sacrifice workers in the name of fiscal austerity.  Soon, all Social Programs will be on the chopping block, but our Military Crusades will advance, unimpeded.  We must not let this stand.

61% of Oregonians recently polled SUPPORT Arizona's Draconian new Immigration Laws

Categories:
program date:
Wed, 06/23/2010

Is Oregon an anti-immigrant state? A new study suggests it is.

study commissioned by a consortium of Northwestern public radio stations says that a majority of Northwesterners -- Oregonians, Washingtonians and Idahoans, or whatever they call themselves -- agree with the anti-immigrant law passed recently in Arizona. In Oregon, that support is at 61 percent.

What does it mean? Is anti-immigrant sentiment more widespread than we thought? And what is that sentiment exactly? Fear, born of cultural ignorance? Economic anxiety? Good ol' racism? A toxic brew of all three? With Joe on vacation, Abe leads the discussion.

Abe and Joe dive into the murky waters of the ongoing Gulf of Mexico horror show

Categories:

Tue, 06/08/2010

Abe and Joe dive into the murky waters of the ongoing Gulf of Mexico horror show, and pay appropriate homage to the impeccable free market forces that first caused the disaster, and then failed to remedy it.

Also: President Obama continues his reluctance to seize the populist moment that history has handed him, as oil executives join the ranks of the elite power brokers to whom he has shown deference. Will the Gulf tragedy finally be enough to jolt him from his corporate doldrums?
