Mei Mei the Film

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of her Peabody award-winning documentary Mei Mei, A Daughter's Song, Dmae Roberts is adapting this radio memoir docu-play into a film.  This memoir documentary screens 8pm, Nov. 21st at the Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton St. in Portland. Dmae talks with Arthur Dong, a Peabody-winning filmmaker who has written a book based on his research and  film: Forbidden City, USA. Dong's 1989 film aired on PBS' American Experience program.  Now 25 years later, he put together a comprehensive document of photos and stories from the original performers from 1936-1970. Host Dmae Roberts talks features two original shows in different disciplines. First up, artistic director Samantha Van Der Merwe of Shaking The Tree Theatre talks about creating an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's "Masque of the Red Death" with the writer so Playwright's West.  Joining her is actor Matthew Kerrigan (featured in the photo) who will perform a monologue as Poe from the play.

What would October be without a Day of the Dead celebration? Dmae Roberts checks in Olga Sanchez, artistic director of Miracle Theatre who has put together a new Dia de los Muertos meets Shakespeare's famous dead characters. We'll find out which Shakespearean character Sanchez has brought back to life (sort of) in this inventive concept. It's all part of Portland's 400th year anniversary committment to produce all of Shakespeare's sworks within two years. And in the second part of the show, Sarah Slipper artistic director of NW Dance Project fill us in on "New Now Wow" - three piece created by  world-class master choreographers including Portland's Minh Tran.

Dmae Roberts presents a two-part Stage & Studio focusing on the songs and stories of Tongan sewing circle in Portland as well as a play celebrating the heroic stand of Senator Wayne Morse, one of two congressman to vote against the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.

First, Dmae gives us a feature on Portland's Tongan community through the stories Kato Kakala Kavapalu and Kolini Fusitua for the Migrations project  focusing on little known immigrant and refugee arts in the Portland area. We'll hear about the Pacific Islander Sewing Circle, a group of women who get together to sew and sing in beautiful harmonies as they work. Learn how this one group is the hub for hundreds of Tongan families in the Northwest.

Producer Tali Singer profiles Portland Music Therapist Marion Van Namen.   As part our continuing series of features on Stage and Studio with Dmae Roberts… Tali Singer brings us a side of the arts used for therapy.  According to the American Music Therapy Association, music can help children and adults with disabilities or illnesses.  Marion Van Namen, a music therapist in Portland says when a person makes music, it gives her a picture of who they are as a human and that helps her open them up to possibilities to improve their lives. Tali Singer brings us this profile of a music therapist at work…
