Appalachian Christmas Celebration

Tune in Tues Dec. 4th at 11am on KBOO 90.7FM for a look at Portland Revels Appalachian Christmas. We'll hear about this yearly tradition of presenting the music and dance of traditions around the world. 

Around the country there's a tradition of Revels which is a season celebration of holiday traditions during Christmas. Portland Revels has been bringing a yearly celebratory performance each year set in different countries. This year the Christmas Revels brings music and dance of mid-1800s Appalachia featuring a chorus of more than 70 to reenact an Appalachian village with carols, spirituals and clogging.

Rupa and the April Fishes

Join Guest Producer and Host Sarika Mehta for a special on gifted singer and activist Rupa Marya, the lead vocalist and director of Rupa and the April Fishes. Their music encompasses elements of jazz, blues, klezmer, folk amongst others, with songs in Spanish, French and English. Rupa herself was born in India, grew up in France and San Francisco, and uses her music to give voice to her experiences.

Dmae Roberts presents a half-hour version of Coming Home: Return of the Alutiiq Masks, a one-hour radio documentary that interweaves oral history interviews, Alutiiq music and soundscapes.This full-length documentary originally aired in 2008 on about 188 public radio stations around the country.

Horatio Law and The Open Circles Project

How do you bring together widely different communities through an art-making project? Tune in Nov. 13 at 11am on KBOO 90.7FM for some insights with artist Horatio Law and his Open Circles project. Law is working with communities at Sisters of the Road and Planned Parenthood to create a public installation that will get people thinking and talking about social currency and self-empowerment.

Dmae Roberts talks with Grace Carter and Matthew Kern (featured left) of defunkt theatre about "4.48 Psychosis" by Sarah Kane. The play is described as a journey into the human mind at the darkest hour.  The  play uses of multimedia projectsions, sound and dreamlike performances. This show runs through April 10th at the Back Door Theatre behind Common Grounds Coffee.

Also featured, Bobby Bermea tells us about two projects he's working on for Baseroots Theatre, a company he founded devoted to African American works.  "In Darfur"a reading at Artists Repertory Theatre on March 15th at 7pm at Artists Repertory Theatre  and "Radio Golf" by August Wilson April 3-25th.

Heidi Durrow's The Girl Who Fell From The Sky

33d Portland International Film Festival w/Bill Foster

Snow Falling On Cedars & Japanese Internment

Kualoa Ranch - LOST TV show

Dmae Roberts visits Kualoa Ranch where much of the hit series LOST is filmed. Kualoa Ranch was sold in 1850  by King Kamehameha III to the Judd family whose descendants still run the ranch as a working cattle ranch and tourist destination. The pristine and awe-inspiring location has been the site for TV shows and films since the 70s. The most recent were Jurassic Park and the hit show LOST. Dmae prepared this audio tour of the rance with co-owner and Operations Director Dave Morgan.

Dancer Minh Tran & Tour of LOST sites in Hawaii

Host Dmae Roberts talks with Dance and Choreographer Minh Tran about his final performance "KISS" which chronicles his coming out as an Asian gay man which is still controversial in the Asian community. And in the second part of the show, Dmae visits Kualoa Ranch where much of the hit series LOST is filmed. 

*Minh Tran's "KISS" was commissioned by White Bird Dance for their "Uncaged Series" and will be performed in a two-part bill with Tere Mathern in the round at the World Forestry Center. Here's a video of Tran describing his performance.
