At 11am, Dmae Roberts talks with Lorraine Bahr of Well Arts Institute's production of "Voices of Elders" an original play based on stories collected at senior centers in Portland. 

And at 11:10am Dmae presents a preview of her memoir-in-progress, Lady Buddha and the Temple of Ma, a multicultural memoir.  She reads an excerpt that answer the question often asked of Mixed Race people: "How did your parents meet?" Dmae will be reading/performing another excerpt at Lewis and Clark for their Multicultural Symposium.

  Host Dmae Roberts talks with Chanda Hall, the artistic director of Staged who's collaborating with  Milagro Theatre to produce "Songs for a New World" - composed by the Tony-award-winning Jason Robert Brown. "Songs for a New World" is a long-time off-Broadway hit. The composer himself will be coming to Portland to perform an evening of his new work as a benefit for "Staged." Chanda Hall also talks about some of the outreach to youth singers her organization brings to the Portland area.

Hand2Mouth Risk/Reward Festival

Sara Slipper & James Canfield of NW Dance Project

 Dmae Roberts talks with Sarah Slipper, founding artistic director  of Northwest Dance Project and Choreographer James Canfield, founding artistic director of the Oregon Ballet Theatre. Opening June 17th, Northwest Dance Project premieres four original dance works to celebrate their first anniversary in their beautiful studio and performance center in the heart of the Mississippi district over two weekends in June.  

Slipper describes the piece she's developing which is a response to oil spilling tragedy in the Gulf of Mexico and Canfield tells us how Shakespeare has always influenced his work including the piece he's creating based on "Hamlet."

Art From The Heart

On Stage and Studio, Dmae Roberts featured a profile of Art From The Heart , arts opportunities for people with developmental disabilites, produced by Steve Greenberg.  

For fifteen years, an art school, studio and gallery in northeast portland has been fostering the creative growth of its students. The 25-30 students at the non-profit “art from the heart” take classes in painting, sculpture, weaving, music, and theater. The organization provides studio time and training for students to work on their individual projects. At art from the heart, all of the students are adults with developmental disabilities.

Author Molly Gloss & Heroines of the American West

Host Producer Dmae Roberts presents an Oregon Treasures feature piece for Stage and Studio on KBOO 90.7FM. The new series will air throughout the year profilng veteran artists and arts organizations that have enriched the state of Oregon through their art. 

This show profiles Author Molly Gloss, Portland novelist. Gloss' books have shed light on untold stories of women in the American West.

Molly Gloss was a finalist the Pen/Faulkner award for American fiction foThe Jump-Off Creek about a woman who homesteads in Oregon in 1895 and won the James Tiptree Jr. Award for her novel Wild Life about an early 20th century feminist in Washington. Her newest work is The Hearts of Horses—the story of a young woman who breaks horses in Eastern Oregon.

Katie Taylor & Eleanor O'Brien talk Producing

Dmae Roberts talks with two women producers who are doing their own kind of performance productions: Katie Tayler of Opera Theatre Oregon and Eleanor O'Brien of Dance Naked Productions.

Both are artistic directors of independent companies producing their forms of non-traditional performance. They'll talk about the challenges and advantages of forming your own company to do work that might otherwise not be produced. Opera Theatre Oregon just opened "Hercules vs. Vampires" - a technicolor opera of a cult classic. Dance Naked Productions also opened "Inviting Desire" - an original work of erotic art based on a survey of hundreds of women.

Henry Winkler & Dyslexia

Host Dmae Roberts features an exclusive interview with Henry Winkler about his new young adult book "Hank Zipzer: A Brand New Life. Actor Henry Winkler, best known for his playing "The Fonz" on the long-running show "Happy Days" recently came to Portland to debut his new book focusing on the learning challenges of a 5th grade boy named Hank Zipzer. Dmae talked with Winkler while he was signing books backstage at Powell's Books.

Mei Mei, A Daughter's Song by Dmae Roberts

 As a special program for Asian Pacific American Heritage month, Dmae Roberts presents her 1990 Peabody award-winning documentary"Mei Mei, A Daughter's Song" This memoir docu-theatre piece is the personal story of cross-cultural and cross-generational conflict produced by Dmae Roberts.

 "Mei Mei"chronicles Dmae and her mother, Chu-Yin, as they travel to Taiwan together. Interviews and dramatizations weave in and out to tell the story of a conflicted daughter and a mother who suffered abuse, starvation and the horrors of World War Two. "Mei Mei has been broadcast on NPR, the BBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1991, Dmae adapted the radio piece into a stage play at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center theatre.

"Gracie & The Atom" by Mckinley

 Dmae Roberts features the world premiere musical "Gracie and The Atom" by McKinley. She talks with the playwright/singer and cast member Marissa Neitling about the hit show that runs through May 30th at Artist Repertory Theatre. They both sing a couple of duets and we hear some tracks off McKinley's CD of "Gracie and The Atom."

This was part of a special one-hour membership drive edition of Stage and Studio.
