Flute Alliance to break Guinness World Record

Dmae Roberts focuses on the importance of music education with The Flute Alliance. They're staging the Flute Fandango on Aug. 6th at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland. The international gathering of flutists will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records. Denise Westby, founder of Flute Alliance and John Gibson, president of The Music Education Assistance Program joins Dmae to talk about kids and music. They'll also play cuts from the recent Flute Alliance Boot camp.

JAW: A Playwrights Festival 2010

Host Dmae Roberts features JAW: A Playwright's Festival 2010. She talks with Associate Artistic Director Rose Riordan and the "Made In Oregon" playwrights: William S. Gregory, Sara Jean Accuardi and Ebbe Roe Smith. Their plays range in topics from the first African American officer in the U.S. military to a portrait of an elderly widow to the nightmares of a middle-aged man. All the staged reading events of JAW are free to the public and run July 17 - 25, 2010 at Portland Center Stage's Armory building.

Actors Conversatory Showcase & Filmusik's Gulliver's Travels

Dmae Roberts presents the graduation showcase of the Actors Conservatory Theatre July 14-17. Two students perform their monologues live in the studio and Artistic Director Beth Harper tells us about the school and the program. We also hear from Galen Huckins of Filmusik a group that performs original soundtracks live for classic films. Their next production is  "Gulliver's Travels" July 16-23 at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland.

Michael Rohd, Sojourn Theatre's "On The Table"

Dmae Roberts talks with Michael Rohd, founder & artistic director of Sojourn Theatre about "On The Table"--his new project. The show brings together two different families, one in Molalla and one in Portland, as a way to break bread and engage two different communities in dialogue. The theatre event brings two audiences experiencing two simultaneous productions together via bus for a fictional memorial service of two family elders. "On The Table" was recently featured in American Theatre magazine.

Shakespeare In The Parks/Portland Actors Ensemble's "Pericles'

 Host Dmae Roberts talks with Shakespeare In The  Parks/Portland Actors Ensemble about their new production of "Pericles: Prince of Tyre" by William Shakespeare. The show just opened and will run through July 17th.

For the last 41 years, the Portland Actors Ensemble has brought Shakespeare to numerous parks in the Portland area. The group will also be performing “The Comedy of Errors” that opens July 31st  through September 6th. We'll find out why Shakespeare endures and how this group has been able to provide it for so long.

As a special program for Asian Pacific American Heritage month, Dmae Roberts presents her 1990 Peabody award-winning documentary"Mei Mei, A Daughter's Song" This memoir docu-theatre piece is the personal story of cross-cultural and cross-generational conflict produced by Dmae Roberts.  "Mei Mei"chronicles Dmae and her mother, Chu-Yin, as they travel to Taiwan together. Interviews and dramatizations weave in and out to tell the story of a conflicted daughter and a mother who suffered abuse, starvation and the horrors of World War Two.

Art From The Heart

On Stage and Studio, Dmae Roberts featured a profile of Art From The Heart , arts opportunities for people with developmental disabilites, produced by Steve Greenberg.  

For fifteen years, an art school, studio and gallery in northeast portland has been fostering the creative growth of its students. The 25-30 students at the non-profit “art from the heart” take classes in painting, sculpture, weaving, music, and theater. The organization provides studio time and training for students to work on their individual projects. At art from the heart, all of the students are adults with developmental disabilities.

Host Producer Dmae Roberts presents an Oregon Treasures feature piece for Stage and Studio on KBOO 90.7FM. The new series will air throughout the year profilng veteran artists and arts organizations that have enriched the state of Oregon through their art. 

This show profiles Author Molly Gloss, Portland novelist. Gloss' books have shed light on untold stories of women in the American West.

Molly Gloss was a finalist the Pen/Faulkner award for American fiction foThe Jump-Off Creek about a woman who homesteads in Oregon in 1895 and won the James Tiptree Jr. Award for her novel Wild Life about an early 20th century feminist in Washington. Her newest work is The Hearts of Horses—the story of a young woman who breaks horses in Eastern Oregon.

Katie Taylor & Eleanor O'Brien talk Producing

Dmae Roberts talks with two women producers who are doing their own kind of performance productions: Katie Tayler of Opera Theatre Oregon and Eleanor O'Brien of Dance Naked Productions.

Both are artistic directors of independent companies producing their forms of non-traditional performance. They'll talk about the challenges and advantages of forming your own company to do work that might otherwise not be produced. Opera Theatre Oregon just opened "Hercules vs. Vampires" - a technicolor opera of a cult classic. Dance Naked Productions also opened "Inviting Desire" - an original work of erotic art based on a survey of hundreds of women.

Host Dmae Roberts features an exclusive interview with Henry Winkler about his new young adult book "Hank Zipzer: A Brand New Life. Actor Henry Winkler, best known for his playing "The Fonz" on the long-running show "Happy Days" recently came to Portland to debut his new book focusing on the learning challenges of a 5th grade boy named Hank Zipzer. Dmae talked with Winkler while he was signing books backstage at Powell's Books.

Mei Mei, A Daughter's Song by Dmae Roberts
