Dmae Roberts has a behind-the-scenes  on-location talk with Rose Riordan, associate artistic director of Portland Center Stage and director of JAW: A Playwright's Festival 2014. We'll hear how she started off this 16-year old festival with "a bag of bagels" to grow into a huge weekend of four plays and a multitude of events. Not only do we get the inside scoop on what makes this year's playwrights unique but we get insight into the collaborative process at JAW. Plus Riordan tells us how a desire for voyeurism and invisibility can lead to a life in the theatre! Sort of.

Dmae Roberts features two backstage interviews at her home studio about two Shakespeare plays about to open in Portland.

First she talks with founding artistic director Michael Mendelson of the Portland Shakespeare Project. They’re producing The Tempest at  Artists Rep's Alder stage. The production stars veteran actress Linda Alper as “Prospera” a magical role usually performed by a male actor. PSP is also presenting a staged reading of The Admirable Crichton by J.M. Barrie (of Peter Pan fame) directed by Jon Kretzu. 

Conduit Turns 20!

Portland Actor's Ensemble presents Shakespeare's "Antony & Cleopatra" + "A Midsummer Night's Dream"

Portland abounds with summer Shakespeare but Portland Actors Ensemble has been producing Shakespeare in the Parks for the last 45 years. PAE kick things off a culturally innovative outdoor productions Antony and Cleopatra scheduled and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Portland's theatre community has committed to producing every Shakespeare play, sonnet and narrative poem  within a two-year period that started with 450th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth and culiminates in the 400th anniversary of his death.

Author Lisa See and "China Dolls"

Dmae Roberts talks with acclaimed author Lisa See whose new book, China Dolls, features the era of the Asian American nightclubs during the 1930s to 50s. Her previous books, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Shanghai Girls and Dreams of Joy focused mainly on characters living in China and some who have emigrated. In China Dolls she focuses on three friends American born Asian Americans girls who come from different backgrounds and ethnicities.  As always, See's books covers a long period of time while revealing historic moments in time with vivid and complex memorable characters.

Jessica Wallenfels: "Find Me Beside You"

Host Dmae Roberts features Jessica Wallenfels' world premiere of her original rock ballet "Find Me Beside You." The show is a Many Hats Collaboration that tells the story of a group of teens in 1968 Belfast who have formed their own family. With a 10-piece ensemble of actors, singers and musicians, this new summer production blends rock opera and physical theatre. Guests are: Jessica Wallenfels, director/choregrapher, Eric Nordin, musical director,  and Dave Cole, lead actor.  The show runs August 4th through 14th.

The Flute Fandango

Dmae Roberts focuses on the importance of music education with The Flute Alliance. They're staging the Flute Fandango on Aug. 6th at Oaks Amusement Park in Portland. The international gathering of flutists will attempt to break the Guinness Book of World Records. Denise Westby, founder of Flute Alliance and John Gibson, president of The Music Education Assistance Program join Dmae to talk about kids and music. Also joining them is Jeffrey Chapman, a flutist and a student at Fowler Middle school. The three of them also share cuts from the recent Flute Alliance Boot camp.

Myrlin A. Hermes, "The Lunatic, the Love & the Poet"

Dmae Roberts features Portland Novelist Myrlin A. Hermes and her book The Lunatic, the Lover and the Poet. Hermes turns Shakespeare "topsy-turvy" bringing a fresh look and "prequel" to Hamlet.

In her book, Horatio and Hamlet are in a bisexual love triangle with Lady Adriane who is based on the Dark Lady of Shakespeare's sonnets. Hermes talks about how she based the book on the storyline behind the Sonnets and worked to bring us the lusty, bawdy world of Elizabethan England. JAW: A Playwrights' Festival 2010

Host Dmae Roberts features JAW: A Playwrights' Festival 2010. She talks with Associate Artistic Director Rose Riordan and the "Made In Oregon" playwrights: William S. Gregory, Sara Jean Accuardi and Ebbe Roe Smith.

Their plays range in topics from the first African American officer in the U.S. military to a portrait of an elderly widow to the nightmares of a middle-aged man. All the staged reading events of JAW are free to the public and run July 17 - 25, 2010 at Portland Center Stage's Armory building.

Portland Actors Conservatory and Filmusik

Dmae Roberts presents the graduation showcase of the Portland Actors Conservatory July 14-17. Two students perform their monologues live in the studio and Artistic Director Beth Harper tells us about the school and the program. We also hear from Galen Huckins of Filmusik a group that performs original soundtracks live for classic films. Their next production is  "Gulliver's Travels" July 16-23 at the Hollywood Theatre in Portland.

Portland Actors Conservatory

Dmae Roberts talked with Beth Harper, Artistic Director of the Portland Actors Conservatory.

Harper started the training school 25 years ago and it's now the only nationally accredited conservatory in the Northwest. PAC has adults applying for training nationally and all over the world.

Two students, Fernanda Stier and Stacy Downs reflect on their upcoming graduation showcase, which happens July 14-17.

Sojourn Theatre--"On the Table"

Dmae Roberts talks with Michael Rohd, founder & artistic director of Sojourn Theatre about "On The Table"--his new project. He's joined by Rebecca Martinez and Shannon Scrofano. With music by Dave Lowensohn.

On The Table brings together two different families, one in Molalla and one in Portland, as a way to break bread and engage two different communities in dialogue. The theatre event brings two audiences experiencing two simultaneous productions together via bus for a fictional memorial service of two family elders. On The Table was recently featured in American Theatre magazine.

Portland Actors Ensemble--Shakespeare in the Parks

 Host Dmae Roberts talks with Curt Hanson, Matt Volner and Holly Wigmore Shakespeare In The Parks/Portland Actors Ensemble about their new production of "Pericles: Prince of Tyre" by William Shakespeare. The show just opened and will run through July 17th.

For the last 41 years, the Portland Actors Ensemble has brought Shakespeare to numerous parks in the Portland area. The group will also be performing “The Comedy of Errors” that opens July 31st  through September 6th. We'll find out why Shakespeare endures and how this group has been able to provide it for so long.

Songs For a New World-Milagro/Staged

  Host Dmae Roberts talks with Chanda Hall, the artistic director of Staged who's collaborating with  Milagro Theatre to produce "Songs for a New World" - composed by the Tony-award-winning Jason Robert Brown. "Songs for a New World" is a long-time off-Broadway hit. The composer himself will be coming to Portland to perform an evening of his new work as a benefit for "Staged." Chanda Hall also talks about some of the outreach to youth singers her organization brings to the Portland area.
