Die German Stunde — the first “German Hour” on KBOO

How much do you really know about Germans?
Why is going naked on a beach or in a public park in Germany okay and why are there restrictions here? Is the going naked movement gaining strength in Oregon and could Germany serve as a model? How do Germans deal with nudity and is there a difference between baring it in the eastern part of Germany versus the west? Germany has fully developed single payer healthcare, so why does a German who worked in Portland and went back to Germany yearn to return here? And then there’s the World Cup.

KBOO HAIR RAISING ‘STOP THE OIL, SAVE THE GULF’ SPECIAL

Thank you to everyone who participated in our hair raising special on Monday June 7th, from 8 am to 7 pm!  A special thanks to all the volunteers who helped with today’s program, with an extra special thank you to Jacob Anderson-Minshall for his hard work and dedication to making today’s program a reality.

And thanks to all of the hair stylists who volunteered their time to cut hair – Lisa Butti, formerly of Salon Bucci, Lyn Moelich, Heather and Tab from the Tribe Hair Salon, Brett from Beige Blond, and all the stylists from Bishops Barbershop who participated in today’s event. We had over eighty people get their hair cut in our backroom barber shop, and collected over 50 pounds of hair. This hair will be sent to the Meg Perry Center for Environmental Peace and Justice in New Orleans, where it will be turned into hair rugs to help soak up the oil.  Check the KBOO website in the next few days for recordings of today's programs.

Village Building Convergence and local community-building

We turn now from the global to the local, with two events beginning today in Portland attempting to build local community – the Village Building convergence, and a North Portland neighborhood treque, or barter exchange.

The Village Building convergence is a week long event to bring together neighborhoods to create long-lasting community structures and transform our city.  Eoin Bastable brings us this next piece about the village building convergence.

And we turn to another type of grassroots community building – an event called the ‘Treque’, a week-long barter exchange beginning today and continuing until next Friday at North Failing and Commercial Avenues in north Portland.
