West Coast Premiere of Orphee, an Opera by Philip Glass

program date:
Thu, 11/12/2009

Portland was honored with the privilege of hosting the West Coast premiere of Orphee, a relatively new opera composed by Philip Glass. Orphee is a 2 Act story of mysterious death in juxtaposition of two worlds --– driven by a score from Philip Glass. The music itself worthy of a concert, beautifully composed, demonstrating the characteristic hypnotism of polyrhythm mixed in a rich palette, patterned by blocks and cycles; the kind of stuff that Glass is venerated for. And the Portland Opera Orchestra performs the score by Glass beautifully.

In a modern setting, the story of a famous poet, Orphee and his jealousy of an 18 year old up and coming poet, Cegeste, who is admired and supported by the princess which stirs an obsession from Orphee. As the story unfolds the princess seems to communicate with another world – a world of the dead. Orphee witnesses a resurrection, putting him in an uncomfortable place, and a seemingly uninvolved chauffeur of the princess gives Orphee some radio that transmits poetic statements, one after the next. Orphee obsessively transcribes the phrases, one after the other, neglecting his newly pregnant wife. In his neglect, Orphee loses her to the princess and the other world, and again, the seemingly uninvolved chauffer turns over the mirror of the other world, where Orphee goes to retrieve his wife. And the plot thickens. The stage is determined by a mirror pattern; the story is told in 2 settings, 2 acts, and 2 worlds. One begins to realize there is a duality in all things and what makes this opera compelling is that it calls out this human struggle, in the mirror of juxtaposition. Like many 2 act plays, the ending is not so much a resolution, but a mystery folded on to itself.

Portland Opera is performing Orphee November 12th and 14th at Keller Auditorium. The performances are being recorded for an upcoming release, so look for that. Reporting the arts for K-B-O-O, this is Sean Ongley.

Bruce W. Hodges on KBOO

program date:
Thu, 03/12/2009

We at the Kill Ugly Radio Heavy Industries Trust© were both pleased and honored to have on as our special guest Portland artist Bruce W. Hodges.

Mr. Hodges has been making unique sounds with his electrified Jew's harp under the moniker The EJH for years and he came down to the KBOO air room for a live set of his mind-bending music.

From the liner notes of Bruce's CD:
"It has been found in a few genres.  Blues, country-western,  folk and others.  Well, over the decades with nothing else better to do I would twang walk everywhere I went.  My first decade I always had one in my pocket a Snoopy or an American folk Harp. Today it’s a cole black and I stopped carrying them around about 20 years ago.  I always wondered what it would sound like if it was played through guitar effects. I never knew for at least another decade. Then I would occasionally bump into a mic and some kind of effect usually a reverb or a simple delay, phase or flange. This scenario was usually some person I’ve met who was in a band and would show me his guitar and stuff..."

Bruce deftly played multiple harps while switching through various effects to make an audio sculpture that swirled around the stereo spectrum.

He also chatted with us briefly about his unusual technique, his harps and effects.

You can visit Bruce and his music at his MySpace page here.

Dear Listeners,

Happy New Year!  Thanks for allowing me in to wake you from your slumber this morning and ease you into the new day and the new year with some fun (and, in cases, improbable) music.  I had a blast putting this show together and would love to hear that you enjoyed it!

Here are some of the lyrics from the third track I played this morning, Moscow-born Regina Spektor's "On the Radio."  Thoughts to take you into 2010...

"...This is how it works...you're young until you're not...You love until you don't...You try until you can't...You laugh until you cry...You cry until you laugh...And everyone must breathe...Until their dying breath...No this is how it works...You peer inside yourself...You take the things you like...Then try to love the things you took...And then you take that love you made...And stick it into someone else's heart...Pumping someone else's blood...And walking arm in arm...You hope it don't get harmed...But even if it does...You'll just do it all again...And on the radio...You'll hear November Rain...That solo's awful long...But it's a nice refrain...You listen to it twice...'Cause the DJ is asleep..."

Keep your circle of friends close in 2010...keep music spinning on your CD player...keep dancing and singing...keep open to new things in this new year...fall in love!

Warmly,

Diane Hunt

A Kill Ugly Radio Halloween/Samhain Mix

I’ve been wanting to mix a live Halloween show for years since (de)programming at KBOO, but one thing or another made it not happen. But tonight, I did and had a blast. It was a mix of tunes I’ve been rolling into my (semi) yearly Halloween mixes for a while with some relatively new discoveries, with some horror movie clips and the like thrown in for good measure. I love Halloween and to me, music and scary sounds are my favorite part of it – along with a few choice horror flicks. And this is probably going to be my whole Halloweening ritual for this holiday weekend; after three shows this week (Monday, Thursday and this show), I am beat

I Found a Sound: A Brief History of Sampling and Appropriation in Music

Dr. Zomb and RefuDJ ManRich present a chronological look at sampling, from it's roots in Musique Concrete and Avant Garde, to the pioneering lp by Brian Eno and David Byrne, and on to culture jamming artists such as Negativland, John Oswald, Evolution Control Committee, as well as Turntablism in Hip Hop and finally, recent Mashup masterpieces. Plunder Radio!!!

Fun show. We helped raise a few bucks for KBOO and presented - in rough chronological order - a somewhat abbreviated overview of sampling and appropriation in music.

It's amazing where the road will lead when you get two DJs in the room with pickings from their respective collections. We ended up continually surprising each other when one record from one of us would dovetail with something in another's crate, with little or no pre-planning.

Dr. Zomb and I would like to thank all the folks who provided or suggested material, among them DJ Broken Window, Rolf Semprebon, Marc De Gierre, Mssr. Chris Merrick and more...

I would also like to dedicate this show to KBOO's Papa Dada, the late, great Richard Francis, who blew my teenage mind by playing historic cut-up and tape art music on his show all those years ago.

Econopocalypse Lost - or, Spend Half as Much - Get Twice As Much.

A mix of speakers on the economy and it's supposed recovery. What's to come? Will the economy recover under the Obama adminstration and it'll be back to normal again? Free to use your home equity to leverage essential purchases like Wave-Runners and 100 inch televisions? Or, will it lead to economic chaos and - hopefully - small, local cooperative economic systems?

We hear Douglas Rushkoff on capital and where it came from and maybe where it's going. We hear Socialist professor Mike Davis speaking on Obama being called a socialist by the mainstream punditry and - of course - MIT Professor Noam Chomsky in a freeform mix-down. Spend twice as much, get half as much.

We also heard some John Zorn, some new material from KBOO's Jim Larrence and we pay homage to Satan with Camille Sauvage and Anton LaVey.

I had Portland musician Bruce W. Hodges in the studio and also played some tunes that have been reverberating through my head since my last show.

I played some Steve Beresford 10" eps that someone left in my mailbox and some Nurse With Wound, DJ Spooky, an unpronounceable Polish Post-Punk band and more bits from the late, great Peter Ivors' wonderful TV show New Wave Theatre, a liberal dose of Manchester institution The Fall and also explored some of The BBC Radiophonic Workshop's mysterious history.

Post-Mortem Cramps on Feb. 12th, from 10pm to Midnight

"Hey I'm on my way, on a journey out of this world..."

~Lux Interior (10.21.46 - 2.4.09)

I played lots of music from The Cramps long, illustrious career, including some rarities and well-loved vinyl treats.

I got a lot of nice calls; one from a guy who said he was in a garage full of bike mechanics who were digging the tunes and some even from people who had never heard The Cramps before and liked it.

I'll miss Lux and somehow the world without the possibility of new Cramps records seems unthinkable.

So long, Lux and thanks for all the happy memories and here's hoping Ivy continues on in the mission in some way.
