The Songcircle

In a songcircle, songs are bandied back and forth. Perhaps around a fire. Each week on The Songcircle, we try to spark a fire and bounce artists' songs off one another in a similar way. Sometimes in service of a common theme or genre. Sometimes paying tribute to a beloved artist with rare recordings. Sometimes responding to events that impact us all. Always, we strive to present music both new and familiar in a fresh context. You might not love every song, but stay tuned - the next one might be a new favorite!

Jeff Rosenberg is a longtime KBOO DJ and contributor to the Music section of Willamette Week.

Elvis Costello's longtime keyboardist Steve Nieve talks to the Songcircle!

The Songcircle
Air date:
Fri, 09/19/2014 - 1:30pm - 3:00pm
Short Description:
An interview with, and great performances by, one of rock music's finest instrumentalists.
In advance of his appearance at Mississippi Studios on Tuesday night, Sept. 23, Elvis Costello's career-long collaborator, Steve Nieve, will speak to the Songcircle - all the way from Melbourne, Australia, no less!

Nieve's work on piano and organ helped to define Elvis Costello's style, as a member of the Attractions, and later, the Imposters. He's also toured prolifically as a duo with Elvis, and often been his right-(and left)-hand-man when collaborating with other artists.

In addition, Nieve (a nickname coined by Ian Dury) has released a string of solo albums featuring such guests as Sting, Laurie Anderson, Robert Wyatt and more, and is the co-composer of the opera Welcome to the Voice.

Short Description:
Renowned Session Guitarist Val McCallum's first solo record, "At the End of the Day".

"Whether or not you’ve heard of Val McCallum, you’ve undoubtedly heard his work. Val is a supremely talented guitarist, singer, songwriter and studio musician who got his start recording for the legendary songwriter Harry Nilsson at age 18. After 30 years of working with such artists as Sheryl Crow, Lucinda Williams, The Wallflowers, Bonnie Raitt, Loretta Lynn and countless others, Val McCallum has just released his first solo record, At the End of the Day, a collection of spare, acoustic and grippingly intimate songs."
Sam Jones, Off Camera

Val McCallum's solo CD, "At the End of the Day" is available at CD Baby and ITunes.

Songcircle 3/4/11 Interview with John Wesley Harding/Wesley Stace

The Songcircle
program date:
Thu, 03/10/2011

Singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding, a.k.a. author Wesley Stace, stopped by to discuss his new novel, Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer, about an early-20th-century opera composer whose career is cut short by a scandalous murder-suicide. Wes performed the folk ballad "Little Musgrave," which figures prominently in the novel's plot. He also shared two new tunes from his forthcoming, made-in-Portland album.

Following the approx. 50 minute interview is a brief snippet of British folk legend Nic Jones' "The Flandyke Shore"; Wes paid tribute to Jones on the great 1999 album, Trad Arr Jones, on which he first performed "Little Musgrave".
