Joe McMurrian and Darka Dusty pay tribute to the Anthology of American Folk Music

We're joined by local blues guitarist Joe McMurrian to talk about legendary Portland native Harry Smith and his Anthology of American Folk Music (1952), which will be saluted Saturday night at the Mission Theater, 7-10:30 PM, with Harry Smith's One Kind Favor: A 90th Birthday Hometown Tribute to the Anthology of American Folk Music, featuring a host of local artists. Joe will perform a song he'll play at the show, and we'll also hear a live tune from powerhouse singer Darka Dusty. We'll listen to tracks from the Anthology as well as covers of its songs by other artists. And, to kick off our annual Dylan birthay celebration, we'll hear Bob's versions of some of 'em, too.

A Visit from Singer-Songwriter Kenny White

The Songcircle welcomes accomplished singer-songwriter/producer/session musician Kenny White to KBOO, in advance of his performance Friday night at the Alberta Rose Theatre, with Tony Furtado. White spent decades working in the field of commercial jingles in New York City, gaining experience and making connections that would serve him well upon starting his recording career in 2002. Along the way, he collaborated with, performed on, and produced many well-known musicians' albums, such as former J. Geils frontman Peter Wolf, including 2002's Sleepless, which Rolling Stone named as one of the 500 Best Albums Ever Made! Kenny will chat with us and perform a tune or two.

Songcircle 3/4/11 Interview with John Wesley Harding/Wesley Stace

program:
SongCircle
program date:
Thu, 03/10/2011

Singer-songwriter John Wesley Harding, a.k.a. author Wesley Stace, stopped by to discuss his new novel, Charles Jessold, Considered as a Murderer, about an early-20th-century opera composer whose career is cut short by a scandalous murder-suicide. Wes performed the folk ballad "Little Musgrave," which figures prominently in the novel's plot. He also shared two new tunes from his forthcoming, made-in-Portland album.

Following the approx. 50 minute interview is a brief snippet of British folk legend Nic Jones' "The Flandyke Shore"; Wes paid tribute to Jones on the great 1999 album, Trad Arr Jones, on which he first performed "Little Musgrave".

Love

 Hi Jeff,

I really enjoyed the Monkees retrospective last week.

Thanks also for the Love tribute.  I saw them at a little inner city rock festival here in Portland (around 1970).  It was held in the Civic Stadium (now Jeld-Wen Stadium), and was promoted by Jim Felt, who promoted many rock concerts in the day.  Unfortunately, this even didn't work out too well for him.  Tickets didn't sell like he  anticipated, and he couldn't afford to pay all the bands.  I think, in  those days, a rock festival in a concrete stadium wouldn't fly.  People wanted to be in a natural setting.

Word was that Bo Diddley pulled a gun on him, demanding his money.  He was paid and put on a helluva show.

Love was the last band to play.  Sadly, we had to leave in the middle of  their set, as Daddy was waiting in the car for us.  They were rocking it, as we left.  I always thought "Little Red Book" was their biggest hit.  Thanks for paying tribute to this important band.
