Frann Michel reports on Portland Public School and Portland Association of Teachers contract talks. Teachers are not fighting for wages, so much as work and ultimately learning conditions -- including class size, standardized testing, and prep-time during the day. She shares stories from teachers, students, and parents, exposing the District's false narrative of greedy teachers and austerity. She points out that the K-12 public school system, while not perfect, is not fundamentally broken as such and its problems cannot be traced to organized/unionized teachers, or else wealthier school districts and places like Finland would have comparably bad rates of success. 8:23 minutes (7.68 MB)
The speaker is one of the main proponents of a growing movement to curtail the "rights" and destructive practices of corporations at a local, grassroots level. Linzey started the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund in Pennsylvania working for clients trying to stop factory hog farms from moving into their area and similar environmental issues. He soon found his work stymied by a structure of law skewed by Constitutional and legal protections for private property and corporations. Out of that has grown a new "community rights" movement to educate people about the real legal and political structures that maintain corporate dominance as well as crafting local ordinances and ballot intitiatives to curtail corporate power. 63:21 minutes (58 MB)
