Tonight, I started with some upbeat stuff, followed by some crunkstep stuff. Then we moved into our special guest, radio dj, club dj, producer and record collector Fred Fades, all the way from Norway. He played some of his own remixes and original productions, followed by a dj set consisting of some of the records he picked up during his stay here in Portland. Looking at today's playlist, you might notice a theme.

The new PDX Pop Now compilation was released this week, and it seemed like a good opportunity to do a local music only show. If you're not familiar, PDX Pop Now began in 2004, it is a non-profit organization that produces this amazing festival each summer. All local music, free to the public (all ages). Each year they also release a two-disc compilation of local music.

Thavius Beck Live at Holocene

program:
Plugged In
program date:
Thu, 04/02/2009

Composer of mercurial soundtracks for uncertain times, Thavius Beck conjoins various strains of electronic music to arrive at a daringly ambitious sound. He recently joined a lineup of local artists to celebrate black electronic music and benefit KBOO at Holocene in Portland, Oregon.

Joining him were Rasheeda Ameera, Cheetah Finess, and Ayam  in a night curated by KBOO's Deena B of The Soundbox. Listen to the whole set on the Free Music Archive.

Mr. Beck has received recognition in The Wire, Spin, and Urb for his solo releases under the moniker Adlib, the Labwaste project with fellow LA artist Subtitle, his recent production for fellow Mush artist K-The-I???, his early work with Global Phlowtations, numerous guest appearances, and producing for and touring in support of and accompanying Saul Williams. An exceptional programmer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist, Thavius Beck’s many talents allow him to take a song from idea to completion without ever having to leave his cluttered studio.
