The Great Orpheum Gravy Boat Riot by Jrean Shephard

Gremlin Time
program date:
Mon, 09/17/2012

During the years of the Great Depression, small movie theaters would offer contests, and special giveaway events to attract ticket buyers. In tonight's story, Jean Shepherd recalls the weekly contests and special events that Mr Doppler, the owner of the Orpheum Theater of Holman, Indiana, would stage along to attract customers. All seems well until the master showman builds up local expectations too high with one giveaway too many, and suffers the consequences.

Tonight we present "The Great Orpheum Gravy Boat Riot", a short story by Jean Shepherd, the author of "A Christmas Story". Set in a small Indiana town during the years of the Great Depression, Leopold Doppler, owner of the Orpheum Theater, would attract audiences by holding contests each night of the week besides just showing movies. But the trouble started with the offer of a free set of dishes. This program is now posted at <http://kboo.fm/node/50171>

Tonight we present one of Jack London's South Seas Adventure Stories, The Seed of McCoy. A steel hulled clipper ship, carrying grain has a slow smoldering fire deep in one of her cargo holds. Still afloat and under sail, but enveloped in smoke, the captain seeks to go aground on an island. Allowing the fire to burn the wooden parts of the vessel, but leaving its metal hull intact. They have arrived at Pitcarne Island, home to the descendants of the crew of the Bounty. Their governor, old man McCoy, convinces the captain that there is not harbor or even a beach on the island, and he volunteers to lead the ship to the nearest island they can put the ship ashore.
