Out Loud

Out Loud is KBOO's queer culture radio show, celebrating & serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning & allied communities. We feature interviews with community groups, authors, musical talent, and anyone from the queer & allied communities. We strive to give voice to those not heard in the main stream media.

Update on our schedule change for 2013 :: Out Loud will not air the last Tuesday of each month in 2013. Instead, you can enjoy 'Tune In, Turn On and Remember: 45 years of KBOO Community Radio'. This special public affairs programming consists of gems from the KBOO archives in celebration of our 45th anniversary!

Out Loud is a community created radio show. We need volunteers to help create Out Loud. Please consider getting involved, as there are many things that need to happen before, during and after each radio show. Your skills and contributions are welcome and needed! Tonight hear from the Portland chapter of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. They consider themselves to be Nuns of the GLBT community and we'll hear about their mission, their members, and what projects they are currently working on.

The organization was formed with a three part mission: to help other charitable organizations raise money, perform community outreach, and do safer sex education and condom handouts.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence began over 25 years ago in San Francisco, and there are now Sisters world wide, with Portland being one of the newest Orders. Although the Sisters are all inclusive, we primarily work with AIDS related organizations and at risk youth organizations.

The Dream Dance is a response to the lack of safe social space and support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning youth in East Multnomah County. All LGBTQ youth and their allies (ages 21 and younger) are welcome at this event.

Tonight we focus on 2011 by welcoming back to the studio Heather Perkins and Laura Calvo. Heather shares some music samples from her year-long 365.52.12 project. Laura covers some of the political high lights and low life stories from 2011.

Our first music break is Heather Perkins' 'Pump It Up, Girls'

Carla talks with Heather about her mad science music making over the past year, and about Electrogals, the festival of women in the electronic arts. We take a break in our interview to hear 'The Great Curve', a Talking Heads cover that Heather created as part of her goal of a Talking Heads cover band.

After our discussion, we hear 'Requiem for a Squirrel' from Heather Perkins.

Next we welcome Laura Calvo back to the show. Laura was a regular contributor and host of Out Loud earlier in 2011, and she is current the treasure for the Oregon Democratic Party. Laura shares some of the top news stories of the year.

We wrap up the show with a couple of announcements:

Focus on Youth

Tonight we welcome community organizers working to support youth in schools and our communities. Tis the season for some HoHoHomo holiday music, as well!

Our first music break features Venus Envy's 'Rhonda the Lesbo Reindeer', from their CD I'll Be a Homo for Christmas

We welcome Maisha and Sarah to the show. They are working with youth in East Portland in planning a youth dance on Jan 28 at Montavilla Community Center. The goal of this dance is to bring together lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, queer and allied youth to socialize and support eachother. They're also recruiting adult allies for support for this event, with specific requests shared during the show. To get involved and/or to donate, email YouthPrideDance@gmail.com

Music break from Venus Envy's 'Silent Dyke'.

Next we welcome Joy, Stephanie and Sarah from Oregon Safe Schools and Communities Coalition. Joy, who is the co-chair of OSSCC's Board of Directors, shares some background on the organization. Stephanie, who coordinates requests for speakers and trainings, offers perspective on how OSSCC work engages school districts and colleges that train future teachers. Sarah, who works with the Oregon Gay and Lesbian Law Association, shares statistics from Oregon students and from national studies done by the Gay Lesbian and Straight Educator Network . We discuss changes to Oregon Law in 2009 that added sexual orientation and gender identity to groups of youth covered under school safety policies. Oregon Safe Schools created a Safe School Toolkit for the public and schools to utilize. Currently, OSSCC is surveying school districts around Oregon to assess their policies to compare them with current state laws regarding student safety -- ALL student safety, not just lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender or queer youth. We wrap up our conversation with some encouragement for parents, guardians and anyone interested in youth safety to engage with their local schools regarding their anti-bulling policies.

Two articulate and highly informed guests joined Out Loud Radio on December 6

 On Tuesday December 6, Out Loud Radio was pleased to have Jennifer Pizer as our first guest. Jennifer is with the Williams Institute, a think tank located at UCLA Law School. Jennifer reminded us of some critical issues relative to the LGBTQ Community that took place in 2011 and highlighted a few important issues to keep our eyes and ears on for 2012.

Our second guest was David Weekley and ordained minister that has just written a memoir titled "In from the Wilderness." This is an accounting of David's Transgender journey that has stretched over the last 28 years.

  • Michelle Maher, who is an instructor of Counseling Psychology at the Lewis & Clark Graduate School of Education and Counseling.  Michelle is here to speak about a day-long conference that’s coming up on December 1st about how how young people marginalized through sexuality and race are targeted by our criminal justice system.
  • We’ll also hear from Judy Rickard, who wrote a book recounting her experiences and difficulties with federal immigration authorities as she tries to maintain a relationship with a British national.  Here are links to her blog, an excerpt from a reading, and her facebook page.  Judy will be at In Other Words Bookstore for a reading on November 27th at 2 p.m.
  • Later in the show we were joined by Jenn Burleton from Trans Active, who talked about Multnomah County's upcoming proclamation of December as "Transgender Children Awareness Month.  We’ll also hear about the work that Trans Active has done in Mexico as well as information about their silent auction event on December 4th.

 On Tuesday, 15 November, Out Loud Radio was priveledged to have Bob Mensel, Artistic Director for the Portland Gay Men's Chorus join us for a night of great music and history of the life and times of PGMC.

The hour was filled with songs from On Broadway and their latest CD, "Sing and Swing the Season" and ending the show with music from Naked Man which helps commerate the history of HIV/AIDS across America and beyond. In the near future, songs from the production of Naked Man will be included on an upcoming CD by the Portland Gay Men's Chorus. Tony award winner, Levy Price will sing "Stained Glass Window" as one of the last songs on Tuesday's show...
