Jazz in the Afternoon

Every other Wednesday, alternating with David Lifton's "A Jazz World".

Bob Riddle is continuing the 25-year KBOO tradition established by the late Jim Andrews, in Jim's spirit:  the very best in jazz music, from the historical to the present.

A jazz artist or musical theme is showcased from 2 to 3 p.m.  Our wealth of Portland-area-resident musicians is our focus from 3 to 4 p.m with "Jazz Current Events" Jazz Calendar.

Pacific Northwest jazz artists are encouraged to send their recordings to Bob for airplay. Contact:   bruin13@comcast.net      (NOTE e-mail address change eff Feb. 2010)

Rita Rega

A familiar voice to Northwest jazz fans, Rita comes to us by way of KRAB, KMUN, KKSN, KCNR, KKUL and KMHD. A lover of mainstream jazz, don't be surprised if she takes you down a tributary or two. It's always a voyage of discovery with Rita at the helm.

Short Description:
New York musicians of the so-called "Post Bop" Era
Your host lived in New York through August 1960
and heard many of the musicians that you'll hear featured today
live.  Although the term "post bop" had yet to be coined,
the music was moving, melodic, inspiring, and accessible -
for many of us the best of jazz times.

One or more of your favorites are sure to be included.
Hope you'll tune in and enjoy.

Top Vocals Present and Past - we celebrate Billie Holiday's 100th birthday

Air date:
Wed, 04/08/2015 - 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Short Description:
Dave Tull, Rebecca Kilgore guest
For those of us who enjoy good jazz mixed with dry wit,
Dave Tull is not to be missed.  He sings while playing drums,
- both very well - a unique combination.

Dave, from L.A., will guest today, along with nationally-renowned,
and Portland's own, vocalist Rebecca Kilgore.

Dave and Becky are in the midst of a west coast tour
along with bassist Tom Wakeling and Randy Porter,
whose music we'll sample toward show's end.

The last half hour will pay tribute to the 100th anniversary
of Billie Holiday's birth, with music from the first 1958
Monterey Jazz Festival, backed with an all-star band
anchored by then-19-year-old drummer Dick Berk -

Bob Dorough, Miles Davis, Shirley Horn, and Sonny Russo memorial

Air date:
Wed, 03/25/2015 - 2:00pm - 4:00pm
Short Description:
Miles' Few Favorite Vocalists and Sonny Russo Trombone Tribute
Sonny Russo liked to say "It's a Bone World!"

We'll remember this joyful character and friend of jazz
with all trombone tunes during our "jazz current events'
last half hour.  Our Jazz Calendar at 3:30 will include
some local musical scoops.

We'll start by sandwiching a set of Miles' music
between those of two vocalists he admired,
Bob Dorough and Shirley Horn.

Great music guaranteed.
Hope you'll tune in and enjoy.

Your host,
Bob Riddle
