Guess Who's Coming to Radio??!!

A show with a goal to address the sociopolitical issues pertaining to Afrikan peoples in this country (black people), from a younger person's perspective.

The discussions will be combined with positive and political music of various genres, as composed and performed by a long line of descendants. It will feature book highlights, guests who contribute to pro-activity in their respective communities and an opportunity for the listening community to become involved in conversations, by calling in. Let's liberate our minds through the airwaves!!

Being Who You Are...

Air date:
Thu, 06/25/2015 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Short Description:
Don't be afraid...
The 25th of June is the day Michael Jackson transcended, six years ago...  It was only THIS YEAR where we finally came to terms with his not being here.  Since we do have a show specifically dedicated to him (in August), we won't have the whole show dedicated to him; however, we do want to honor his spirit, in terms of his being proud/unapologetic for who he was.  With that, people around the world are also honoring their friends, families and loved ones who are part of the LGTBQ communities.  While the commercialism/capitalistic aspect of what is known as 'pride' is emphasized; if it were not for a Puerto Rican trans woman named Sylvia Rivera, and an African trans woman named Marsha P.

A conversation with Errick Lewis...

Air date:
Thu, 06/11/2015 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Short Description:
"Where Musician Ends and Instrument Begins..."
We've been thinking a lot lately about the state of jazz in this day and age...  So much emphasis and conversation from the mainstream has been on the genre in and of itself, and not the conditions which created jazz...  not the African or spiritual connections (and homage to the ancestors) which weaved in and out of it.

This connection never left, and jazz messengers (respect to Abdullah Ibn Buhaina and Horace Silver) still exist amongst us, continuing the tradition.  Robert Glasper,  Regina Carter, Jaleel Shaw and Madlib are just a few.

A Conversation with Ron Herndon

Air date:
Thu, 05/28/2015 - 8:00pm
Short Description:
Education...
Ron Herndon's experiences with the educational system in Portland, Oregon are well known to those who have been following him.  He has consistently organized against educational injustice and disparities done to African youth.  He had a direct hand in getting Reed College to establish a Black studies program.  With the Black United Front (local chapter), he called for equality in education, focusing on schools such as Harriet Tubman Middle School.

Some Rod Temperton For You!!!

Air date:
Thu, 05/14/2015 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Short Description:
'the man who wrote 'thriller'...'
For this year's Spring membership drive, we are once again focusing on a songwriter whose name may be somewhat familiar to you- but you DO know his songs!!!  Rod Temperton is mostly known as the man who wrote 'Thriller' (as well as 'Off the Wall').  Prior to this period he will forever be associated with, he was a member of the group Heatwave.  Not only did he compose songs for Michael's first two albums as an adult; he also wrote for  Rufus and Chaka Khan, Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, Jeffrey Osborne, Patti Austin, Stephanie Mills, George Benson, and many others!!!

Mama Shafia Monroe and 'Bringin' In Da Spirit'...

Air date:
Thu, 04/23/2015 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Short Description:
all about the little ones...
We always love having Mama Shafia Monroe as a guest on 'guess who's coming to radio??!!'- she always brings it back to that nurturing, warm spirit.  As the founder of the International Center for Traditional Childbearing (ICTC); her work as an international educator, midwife and advocate inspires all those she encounters.

Selma, the 'New Black' and the question of freedom

Air date:
Thu, 03/26/2015 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Short Description:
MORE conversations about language...
The conversation about language is not letting up this month...  We chose to discussed these past few weeks how language can be used as a tool to engage communities in organization and activism; this week, we will take a look at how language is used to distract, divide and confuse.  Specifically, we will be examining the most recent incarnation of the 'New Black' ideology, and the works which have been produced from it.

A Continuation of the Importance of Language... With Mic Crenshaw!

Air date:
Thu, 03/12/2015 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Short Description:
Hip Hop, Mic and Mama C...
We want to make this episode of 'guess who's coming to radio??!!' a continuation of the last one, focusing on words.  it is extremely crucial in this time, as corporate media continues to marginalize people of African descent, under the pretence of 'freedom'. under this pretence, our cultures consistently are appropriated and mishandled (and packaged as a product), outside the original context. There's also the lack of awareness (which we wanted to cover last time as well) in the use of words such as 'borrow' (as in, 'Can i borrow you?'), when using those words to address others.  So much of the language we use towards each other innocuously has roots in the commodification of the human body.

The Importance Of Language... in the spirit of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and W.E.B. DuBois

Air date:
Thu, 02/26/2015 - 8:00pm - 10:00pm
Short Description:
Think about what you say...
As people around the world have been honoring the sunrise of W.E.B. Dubois (February 23, 1868) and the transcendence of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (February 21, 1965); it seems of great importance to discuss the nature of language.  Both men have been highly misinterpreted (and neglected) over the years, without actually taking a keen study to what they were actually saying.

interview with aphrodite jones

Categories:
program date:
Tue, 08/26/2008

this is the interview that appeared on the 20 august episode of 'guess who's coming to radio??!! with aphrodite jones, author of the book 'michael jackson conspiracy'.  she has appeared on programs such as: america's most wanted, the CBS early show, geraldo at large, inside edition, montel wiliams, medical detectives and the o'reilly factor.

on 'michael jackson conspiracy' (from aphroditejones.com):

"In June 2005, when Aphrodite Jones made her last appearance on The O’Reilly Factor related to the Michael Jackson trial, she experienced a striking moment of clarity:

"As I made one of my last public comments on the case,” she remembers, “I realized that I had become one of the media bunch who had predetermined the outcome of the trial, wrongly.  Many people around me were so sure of Jackson’s guilt.  Many reporters had slanted TV and radio coverage to suit the prosecution, and I was one of those folks who had followed that dangerous trend.”

Now, in a new book, Michael Jackson Conspiracy, Jones is setting the record straight.  Aphrodite Jones's most daring book ever examines the case against the world's No. 1 entertainer:  Michael Jackson

Inspired by Jones's courageous writing, Thomas A. Mesereau, Jr., Jackson's high profile attorney, has written a powerful foreword for Michael Jackson Conspiracy.

Under the influence of media, the entire world has reached judgments about Jackson.  The mainstream media report about him with an implicit  judgment, while tabloid media write about him with an explicit judgment.  In the face of this barrage of judgment, the resulting perceptions about Jackson have become aligned -- against him.  It has become impossible for the public to reconcile its admiration for Jackson's genius musical and artistic talent with the harsh judgments against him.  As a result of these seemingly irreconcilable views, it has become easier to ignore the good and focus on the bad.

For years now, we have been duped into believing that there has been only one side to a coin.

With the kind of behind-the-scenes insights that you have come to expect from Aphrodite Jones, Michael Jackson Conspiracy will shock you.  Jones provides a fresh look at the man who has been at the center of so much success -- and controversy.

What emerges from Michael Jackson Conspiracy is an image of the vulnerability of the most powerful entertainer in the world.

All of the myths you have been lead to believe will be shattered.

Everything you have come to know about Jackson will be upturned after you read Michael Jackson Conspiracy.

A book which will forever influence the way trials are reported, Michael Jackson Conspiracy will also move you with emotion.  And it will help you complete the picture of the most fascinating entertainer in the world. "

Chris (guest for 9-10-09)

Hi Jamilah,
Loved the show tonight - I was really struck by Chris' story and how ridiculously the Portland police handled his situation.  It makes me concerned for the future of civic-minded organizations like Copwatch and NoPo Cop Stop which exist to do exactly what Chris was doing - observe & record police conduct and provide that record as a defense to the people who police accuse of wrongdoing.

Would it be possible for KBOO to post tonight's show or, at least, the fifteen minutes that Chris spoke about his encounter with Portland police on your webpage or myspace page?  I would be very interested to listen to it again and pass it along to my friends at Copwatch, if that is okay.  I believe the segment ranged between 8:45 pm - 9:00 pm.  Please feel free to e-mail me with a response - it would be great to hear from you.  Thank you very much for your help, and keep up the excellent work!

motown

Hey I love motown and motown history and it is sorta at the top of my list of interests right now, so if I wanted to offer some insight into your upcoming program, what is the protocol? Is there any way to get involved?

motown

yes, i am actually planning to do another show on motown; i didn't get to fit everything i wanted to fit into the show... my plan is to do something in april. i would like to go more in depth about what i was touching on in the last show... is it possible for a 'person of colour' to be successful in america and not sacrifice or compromise their beliefs? i want to do more in-depth conversations/interviews about that.

i am constantly welcoming people to get involved and have some input for the show, so that is wonderful that you are interested!!! what sorts of things were you thinking about?

speak soon,
peace,
jamilah
