But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?
Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.
And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead & Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.
- Title: Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on his new Smithsonian Collection of the world's music
- Date: 2011-10-15
- Year: 2011
- Producer: Andrew Geller
- Length: 13:41 minutes (12.53 MB)
- Format: MP3 Mono 44kHz 128Kbps (CBR)
Recorded late May 2011 at KBOO Studios by Andrew Geller. We touch on current events, near-future plans including the grand opening in 2012, some really cool recent contributions and much more.

3. Mr. Soul > Last Straw > Cream Puff War
With scant if any acknowledgement on its actual anniversary last month, I thought I'd take the chance on this substitution show (Andrew here) to do it. Thus, all I'm playing today is the February 9, 1973 Grateful Dead show at Maples Pavilion on the Stanford University campus in Palo Alto, CA (full concert audio).
I consider this date to be among several dozen (no I don't have a list) of the most legendary Grateful Dead shows. Not only did they debut more songs than in any other show (and rather well!), this was attempted while also testing the first iteration of the Wall of Sound (2,3) with mixed success. They apparently scorched dozens of tweeters just moments into the opener and had audible problems all show long, some of which you'll hear.
Come see 'Festival Express' this Thursday March 14th in a benefit screening for KBOO.

Regarded by some to be the GREATEST Dead show ever, July 18th 1976 Orpheum Theater S.F. The version we played had been edited to eliminate extended periods of non playing between songs. The Band was clearly in no kind of hurry at these shows in their home town. They also played the 12th. the 13th, the 14th, the 16th (they took the 15th off), and the 17th. But deliver they did! Proof being this wonderful soundboard of this wonderful show. Here's set one. Enjoy! To fill out the show, we played some of the Pure Jerry Release of Warner Theater Washington, D.C. 03-18-78. This Jerry Garcia Band features Kieth and Donna, as well as Maria Muldaur.

Grateful Dead and Friends welcomes Acoustic Hot Tuna to the Aladdin Theater on February 10th! For this special occasion, Begonia Studios Presents will feature Jorma, and Jack rippin' it up at the Paradise Center For The Performing Arts in Paradise, California 12-09-00 First set Sounboard. And then just when you think it can't get any better, The Good Ol' You Know Who will take the stage for a blistering performance at New York's fabled Fillmore East. A point of interest of this 09-19-70 show is that Jimi Hendrix had just passed away the day before. It's pretty obvious that this tragic event was on everybody's mind for this show. Playing is excellent, with great sound as well. Definitely one for the books!
