The Grateful Dead play the Fillmore Auditorium for the last time.

Air date:
Sat, 12/19/2015 - 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Short Description:
Excerpts from the final Grateful Dead Fillmore Auditorium shows in December 1969

In the last couple of weeks it was finally the actual 50th anniversary of both the naming of, and first performance (12/4) as, The Grateful Dead. However that was a house party (okay Acid Test), but not out at a real public venue. The Grateful Dead's first show was on December 10th (and 11th) at the Fillmore Auditorium, originally called Majestic Hall and Majestic Academy of Dancing, dating to 1912..

The Grateful Dead played the Fillmore Auditorium more than either other Fillmore venue (East & West) and also had their last gigs there first. We'll hear portions from that run, December 19-21, 1969.

Air date:
Sat, 11/28/2015 - 12:00pm - 2:00pm
Short Description:
Happy Holidays From Grateful Dead & Friends Featuring Begonia Studios Presents!
Greetings, Fellow Space Travelers! Welcome to the Holiday Season! On this edition of Grateful Dead & Friends, we will be exploring the first ever live performance of Phil Lesh & Friends performed at The Berkeley Community Theater September ninth, 1994. This ground breaking show was the first known Phil Lesh & Friends configuration that would blossum into the Phil and Friends shows that we hear to this very day, difference being that it was actually Grateful Dead et all performing acoustically! Lots to hear and enjoy! After Phil, we will go back to the year 1971 to attend a performance of Grateful Dead at Terminal Island Correctional Facility, San Pedro, California. This show was a benefit for the late Owsley Stanley, whom at the time was a Guest of the State at this facility.

Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on his new Smithsonian Collection of the world's music

program date:
Sat, 10/15/2011

Most of you are familiar with Mickey Hart for his decades of work as one of The Grateful Dead's drummers.

But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?

Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.

And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead &  Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.

You can freely download 10 files and stream 25 others from the Collection and watch a behind-the-scenes tour of Smithsonian Folkways with Mickey.

Welcome to the Begonia Studios Grateful Dead And Friends Holiday Show. I know it's a little bit early but I will be out of town for Christmas. Andrew will be in my slot, and Phil G. will "Phil in" for Andrew. Anyway, we got to feature the newest Road Trips release, which was Road Trips 3 Vol. 1. This release features Oakland Auditorium 12/28/79. But before we could get to that we started the show with an old Buffalo Springfield cut - "On The Way Home". After that, we needed to take care of past biz. Mainly, we needed to complete 10/31/71 Ohio Theater - Columbus, Oh. That being done, we went on to the main feature of the show. After deeply drinking in 12/28/79, we then played some very good 1982 Jerry Garcia Band from Music Mountain - South Fallsburg N.Y.  To bring the show to a close, we played our traditional Christmas song by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman from The Warfield Theater in San Francisco 12/08/91 "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"  Thank you one and all for another wonderful year of bringing you live Grateful Dead, and Their Friends, and I'll be back in January for furthur weirdness!  Happy New Year from Tom Chiles and I, and the whole Grateful Dead and Friends crew! Peace

This is a very cool show with some pretty amazing tunes.  A GREAT version of the 'O1' from the final FW show with a unique ending as well.  The Shrine material has some amazingly complex material for a band just together for a couple of years at that point.  The 'caution' has parts that were culled for the 'Anthem of the Sun' album.  Here's hoping this material gets released/remixed someday..

Hello fellow Space Travelers! Welcome to Begonia Studios Presents Playlist for 10-31-09!  We began the festivities with a little "cry in your beer" music by Mr. Robert Hall (Trouble) Weir. This is our first installment of this broasdcasts "download of the week" segment. I don't know about anyone else, but this was very new to me. Recorded at Pacific High Recorders in S.F., and broadcast on KSAN sometime in 1970. Features Jerry Garcia on pedal steel, Bob Weir, and John Cipolina on guitars, and either Bill Champlin, or Pete Sears on keyboards. Good tunes with lots of banter! This torrent can be found on www.Lossless Legs.com. After those fine acoustic tunes, we heard Kingfish perform "All I Need Is Time" from The Orpheum Theater in Boston Mass. 4-6-76. This was also a reminder to set your clocks back the next morning. We followed up on our promise to complete the Rosemont Horizon 4-13-89 first set sounboard. "Cassidy"and "Don't Ease Me In" were the two cuts we didn't get to play on my last show. Then, just a little nod to Halloween, we played "Beware Of The Blob" by The 5 Blobs from the 1958 classic movie "The Blob". We then got to the main feature of our show. Columbus, Ohio 10-31-71 set one soundboard. This was our featured Download of the week. As you might know, set two of that night was featured on Dick's Picks Volume 2. This first set can be found on www.bt.etree.org  By this time we were joined by our partner in crime Tom Chiles, and also Scott Gillan from The Garcia Birthday Band. Allways good to have them in the room!  But alas, we ran ourselfes out of time, so "Cumberland Blues", and "Saturday Night", and "Johnny B. Goode" will have to wait till my next show. Stay Tuned!!!!! See You Next Month!

I love dead

I always listen to your dead program on sat!

Great!

Solo Jerry At Passaic, NJ

Hey there Sun Lee/ GD&F DJ's...

First, thanks for volunteering. KBOO is the best, thanks to all you wonderful volunteers.

Second, I wanted to make a new comment, this somehow seems to be a reply. Whoops! My skills at these things are pretty slim, my apologies....

Third and main point: I LOVED the (solo acoustic) Jerry set last week, but when I clicked on the link in the PLAYLISTS tab, it played another (GD electric) set. Did I do something wrong? Or perhaps the link is wrong?

I'd love to have access to the Jerry set. Please advise!

Thanks & happy new year to all....

Play more GRATEFUL DEAD dammit!

 Hey Sun,

How many GD songs did you play today performed by the Grateful Dead? I counted four (five if you include Hey Jude.). Play more GD man, it's called the "Grateful Dead and Friends" not "Bands who wish they were the Grateful Dead."

I like the show and I like KBOO but I (and most of my friends who also listen) want to hear the GRATEFUL DEAD, not Furthur, not Widespread Panic, or some local jam band. GRATEFUL DEAD, more please. We don't want to hear other bands playing Grateful Dead songs (Widespread Panic) but the actual GD playing GD music.

Thanks.

Rodrigo

GD marathon

I'd like to request some shows for the GD marathon this weekend. I'd love to hear 12-31-83 Civic Aud  and/or  8-28-82 Veneta OCF grounds. Do you have the SBD's from the Further shows from Oakland w/ John Kadlecik. -thanks, Jakester, Vancouver, WA

Saturday 8/22/09

Duane, sorry I missed your email/show. Perhaps we can schedule another time to do it. Life has been way hectic, but will slow down soon :o)

Chris

The Grateful Dead

Hey, Duane!

Caught your show today for the first time since moving back to the NW after a 33 year exile in Wyoming. In early 1969 (40 years ago!), I was a senior at Columbia River High in Vancouver-new the year before from Connecticut-and not allowed to driver over to Portland after dark. My girlfriend really wanted to go to a concert at this place I'd never heard of to see two bands I'd never heard of. Her Mom consented to drive she, I and her younger sister over and pick us up afterward. Great concert, great bands, great venue-though as a suburban teen, I was a bit shocked by the older hippies and some of their behavior. We, as minors, got kicked out about 10 or 10:30, but it was a memorable evening. The Grateful Dead and the Quicksilver Messenger Service at The Crystal Ballroom!

Enjoyed your show, and will catch it again. Thanks, Beau in Vancouver

Matt's Birthday today!!!!!!!!!

When I spoke with you I did not know it was your special LIFE Day!!!! Wish you peace, joy and good vibes for your DAY and beyond!! Namaste' Sheri Hoffman (your pesky cd addict). A very Happy BirthDAY and many more to come!!
