I couldn't quite believe it, but 1973 is the year in the 70s that I have most neglected in my broadcasts (excluding 1975 and tied with 1979). So today, I'm going to make some amends by featuring a great show, one often overlooked because it sits in between two widely known and revered shows, 5-13-73 at the Iowa State Fair and 5-26-73 at Kezar Stadium.

Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on his new Smithsonian Collection of the world's music

program date:
Sat, 10/15/2011

Most of you are familiar with Mickey Hart for his decades of work as one of The Grateful Dead's drummers.

But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?

Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.

And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead &  Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.

You can freely download 10 files and stream 25 others from the Collection and watch a behind-the-scenes tour of Smithsonian Folkways with Mickey.

Ol' Blue (The Hound Dog)

Welcome to week number two of two in a row from Begonia Studios Presents.  We began our busy broadcast by playing some live footage from The Byrds, recorded in San Francisco at The Fillmore West on 1-4-70.  Bob Dylan's "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" was a good way to kick off the show. "We gonna fly down in the eazy chair!".  We then took some time to take care of biz, and also to welcome back our own Tom Chiles from his trip to Alabama.  We then attempted to play a complete 1st set from Boston Garden 9-26-91 Sbd., as well as finishing up 3-21-91 Capitol Ctr Landover, Md. set 2 Sbd. , which we began on may 23rd.  We got all the way to Mexicali Blues > Cumberland Blues of 9-26-91 before having to break away.  This was to insure that we would have time to complete the Landover Md. second set.  We will complete 9-26-91 on my next show July 25th, as G.D. & F. will be pre-empted on June 27th.  After completing 3-21-91, we filled the 10 minutes or so left in the broadcast with 2 more cuts from The Byrds 1-4-70 show from The Fillmore West.  All these shows are available for downlaod on http://bt.etree.org/index.php?page=0.  You can also get copies locally from Jambo World Crafts on S.E. Hawthorne in S.E. Portland, Oregon.  See you in July!!

May 23rd was part one of two radio shows back to back for Begonia Studios Presents. Week one began with a hilarious bit of "reality comedy" featuring Ken Kesey, and Babbs at the legendary Springfield Creamory Benefit 8-27-72 Veneta, Oregon. Taken from the soundtrack of the dvd Sunshine Daydream, The plot to dose every drop of water on the concert site proves successful. This is followed by Grateful Dead at Boston Garden, Ma. 4-2-73 Sbd. After the Boston piece We went to Amsterdam To hear Janis Joplin and The Full Tilt Boogie Band do a scorching "Summertime". This was followed by Grateful Dead at The Capitol Center, Landover, Md. sbd. starting in the 2nd set with "Scarlet > Fire", and ending at "Drums". At this point, we ran out of time. We will pick up at Drums on week two which will be May 30th. We will be joined by our good friend Tom Chiles. See you then.

May 2nd was our Grateful Dead And Friends 8 Hour fundraising Marathon, and I thought I would put in the playlist of the entire 8 hours. This way you can get the play list from one place. It was a fun marathon, and I thought that everybody's segment was strong material-wise. An added bonus was the guest appearance on Mathew's segment by David Lemieux, the archivest for our Heros, The Grateful Dead. Mr. Lemieux Brought along a gem from the Grateful Dead Vault that has never seen the light of day in trading circles. Here is the days playlists in their entirety.

On this week's program, we wasted no time in getting started on the main focus of the show. Our goal was to bring to the listening audience the entier second set of March 18th, 1995 at the Philadelphia Spectrum. This show was the first to be featured on the "Download Of The Month" series. 3-18-95 is considered to be one of the best shows of 1995 for content, and quality. It's all too much, and Visions of Johanna were chosen by Phil Lesh for G.D.s release "Fallout From The Phil Zone". This is the link that will take you to the site where this show can be downloaded. Copy the link, then paste it into your browser. My thanks to Tom Chiles for helping me research this show

This month, We finally got completely through 7-15-84 Greek Theater, Berkeley by playing the two encores: Brokedown Palace, and Johnny B. Goode. We then launched into a special program that featured Steve Kimock, and the band Crazy Engine. The centerpiece of the show was a live on air phone interview with Steve Kimock from San Francisco. All this to celebrate the arival of Steve, and Co. to Portland for the first show since Zero played at the Chrystal Ballroom. We also enjoyed playing various cuts from Kimock's live repetoir from 1993 Zero, to the present day Crazy Engine. It's good to have Steve back in Portland at The Aladdin Theater 4-3-09 8:00 pm!

I love dead

I always listen to your dead program on sat!

Great!

Solo Jerry At Passaic, NJ

Hey there Sun Lee/ GD&F DJ's...

First, thanks for volunteering. KBOO is the best, thanks to all you wonderful volunteers.

Second, I wanted to make a new comment, this somehow seems to be a reply. Whoops! My skills at these things are pretty slim, my apologies....

Third and main point: I LOVED the (solo acoustic) Jerry set last week, but when I clicked on the link in the PLAYLISTS tab, it played another (GD electric) set. Did I do something wrong? Or perhaps the link is wrong?

I'd love to have access to the Jerry set. Please advise!

Thanks & happy new year to all....

Play more GRATEFUL DEAD dammit!

 Hey Sun,

How many GD songs did you play today performed by the Grateful Dead? I counted four (five if you include Hey Jude.). Play more GD man, it's called the "Grateful Dead and Friends" not "Bands who wish they were the Grateful Dead."

I like the show and I like KBOO but I (and most of my friends who also listen) want to hear the GRATEFUL DEAD, not Furthur, not Widespread Panic, or some local jam band. GRATEFUL DEAD, more please. We don't want to hear other bands playing Grateful Dead songs (Widespread Panic) but the actual GD playing GD music.

Thanks.

Rodrigo

GD marathon

I'd like to request some shows for the GD marathon this weekend. I'd love to hear 12-31-83 Civic Aud  and/or  8-28-82 Veneta OCF grounds. Do you have the SBD's from the Further shows from Oakland w/ John Kadlecik. -thanks, Jakester, Vancouver, WA

Duane, sorry I missed your email/show. Perhaps we can schedule another time to do it. Life has been way hectic, but will slow down soon :o)

Chris

The Grateful Dead

Hey, Duane!

Caught your show today for the first time since moving back to the NW after a 33 year exile in Wyoming. In early 1969 (40 years ago!), I was a senior at Columbia River High in Vancouver-new the year before from Connecticut-and not allowed to driver over to Portland after dark. My girlfriend really wanted to go to a concert at this place I'd never heard of to see two bands I'd never heard of. Her Mom consented to drive she, I and her younger sister over and pick us up afterward. Great concert, great bands, great venue-though as a suburban teen, I was a bit shocked by the older hippies and some of their behavior. We, as minors, got kicked out about 10 or 10:30, but it was a memorable evening. The Grateful Dead and the Quicksilver Messenger Service at The Crystal Ballroom!

Enjoyed your show, and will catch it again. Thanks, Beau in Vancouver

Matt's Birthday today!!!!!!!!!

When I spoke with you I did not know it was your special LIFE Day!!!! Wish you peace, joy and good vibes for your DAY and beyond!! Namaste' Sheri Hoffman (your pesky cd addict). A very Happy BirthDAY and many more to come!!
