Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on his new Smithsonian Collection of the world's music

program date:
Sat, 10/15/2011

Most of you are familiar with Mickey Hart for his decades of work as one of The Grateful Dead's drummers.

But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?

Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.

And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead &  Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.

You can freely download 10 files and stream 25 others from the Collection and watch a behind-the-scenes tour of Smithsonian Folkways with Mickey.

This show began with two nice tunes from the famous Keystone 7-10-73 in which from two shows a live album was culled from.  This period is arguably Garcia's peak period as a guitar player in which he was playing at a very high level with three totally different bands!!  The 'blues' jam exemplefied how alot of the songs were born from with the "Blues For Allah" album, long open ended jams leading to a structured tune.  The 5-15-70 is another fine example of 1970 GD and is dedicated to the memory of Ron McKernan(AKA Pigpen) in which 3/8 is the 37 year anniversary of his passing and ironically, the same day as the Furthur show at the Coliseum.  See ya' next month!!

Greetings Fellow Space Travelers!

Well, Here we are at the end of February!  My Oh My how time flies! We began this busy broadcast period with a cut dedicated to the late Doug Pete, who was a real fan of the song "Into The Mystic". In his honor, we aired the cut from a KSAN fm broadcast from 09-05-71 featuring no other than Van Morrison.  Introducing "Van The Man" was Tom Donahue. After that, we celebrated the 41st anniversary of the Ultimate Dark Star recorded on 02-27-69 at the Fillmore West. This is the Dark Star that all Dark Stars are compared to. This steller recording was circulated long before the release of the box set documenting the famous 1969 Fillmore West Run, and still stands tall to this day.The segment began with a beautiful Mountains Of The Moon, and glided effortlessly into the familiar notes of Dark Star that most deadheads recognize in the form of the album "Live Dead".  Tom (Chiles) and I felt privilaged to be able to once again bring this wonderful version of Dark Star to our listeners, especially since it is the anniversary of the performance. Grateful Dead just doesn't get any better than this!!! Next up, we ventured back to the year 1989 to relive a Henry J. Kaiser show recorded on 02-05-89. This recording really reflects the "funky" atmosphere of the Kaiser (formerely known as The Oakland Auditorium). The band truly feels right at home here in front of a "hometown audience",  and that comes through the music as well! This show features the breakout of two new songs. In the first set "We Can Run" had it's debut, and in the second set, "Standing on the moon" made it's first appearance. Many listeners called in to comment that "We Can Run" was the worst that they had ever heard. My guess is that the song was so brand new that it had not even been played more than maybe two times. One of the legendary aspects of Grateful Dead is the fact that they were not afraid to try out very new songs in front of thousands of people. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not! After a "Memphis Blues" tease, Weir played a very nice version of "Desolation Row" that really made me forget all about  the sloppy reading of "We Can Run". This recording was downloaded from www.bt.etree.org and was our Download Of The Week. I would like to remind all of you that we will have our 12 hour Grateful Dead Marathon on May 1st, and it will once again be a "Listener Request" fueled event. Submit your request by April 1st.  to www.kboodeadshow@gmail.com . We look forward to hearing your requests, and "show stories"!  See you next month!

This week I mainly delved into the fantastic year of 1972.  The 'sug mags>NFA' is a textbook example of the groove the band was in during that time.  the 10-24-72 has a rare 'Hes Gone' out of a nice 'O1' space!!  Please stay tuned for more surprises next month!!

Ah yes! It's that time again! Time to raise funds! This cycle, Grateful Dead And Friends had only one fundraiser show, and it was on my show! Tom Chiles was a bit under the weather, so he couldn't be with us for this gala event. Look for him on our next show on February 27th. We began our show with the opening pair of tunes from June 20th at the Berkeley Greek.  Midnight Hour, and Mississippi HalfStep. Next, we journeyed to Laguna Beach, California - Irvine Meadows 4-14-85  -  I Need A Miracle > China Cat > I Know You Rider. After more fundraising and highjinx with the gang, we sampled some Old and in the way from 6-6-73 Capitol Theater - Passaic, N.J.  As an enticement to the phones, we went back to Irvine Meadows. This time we sampled 4-13-85. We played the first 4 songs from set one. To close out the show, we broke from tradition, and played a request for someone very dear to me. My Wife Susan. For her,  Moody Blues - Dawning Is The Day. Susan is recovering from a broken shoulder. We will see you again February 27th on Grateful Dead And Friends.

I decided to play some rare stuff this week not only in content but with the style of playing.  A great studio jam involving 'mystery train>who's lovin' you tonight' is good in my book!!  This was recorded during the "Reflections" sessions and another type of jam that is similar but shorter can be found on the JGB Rhino box set.  The jam from 5-20-71 is truly unique in every way and captured how brilliant Jerry truly was from a musical standpoint.  The 7/18/72 'truckin>dark star>comes a time' personifies how high of a level the band was after the epic Europe tour.  this period is arguably his peak lasting through 1973 as a guitar player.  More 1972 next month!!

Hey there Sun Lee/ GD&F DJ's...

First, thanks for volunteering. KBOO is the best, thanks to all you wonderful volunteers.

Second, I wanted to make a new comment, this somehow seems to be a reply. Whoops! My skills at these things are pretty slim, my apologies....

Third and main point: I LOVED the (solo acoustic) Jerry set last week, but when I clicked on the link in the PLAYLISTS tab, it played another (GD electric) set. Did I do something wrong? Or perhaps the link is wrong?

I'd love to have access to the Jerry set. Please advise!

Thanks & happy new year to all....

Play more GRATEFUL DEAD dammit!

 Hey Sun,

How many GD songs did you play today performed by the Grateful Dead? I counted four (five if you include Hey Jude.). Play more GD man, it's called the "Grateful Dead and Friends" not "Bands who wish they were the Grateful Dead."

I like the show and I like KBOO but I (and most of my friends who also listen) want to hear the GRATEFUL DEAD, not Furthur, not Widespread Panic, or some local jam band. GRATEFUL DEAD, more please. We don't want to hear other bands playing Grateful Dead songs (Widespread Panic) but the actual GD playing GD music.

Thanks.

Rodrigo

GD marathon

I'd like to request some shows for the GD marathon this weekend. I'd love to hear 12-31-83 Civic Aud  and/or  8-28-82 Veneta OCF grounds. Do you have the SBD's from the Further shows from Oakland w/ John Kadlecik. -thanks, Jakester, Vancouver, WA

Duane, sorry I missed your email/show. Perhaps we can schedule another time to do it. Life has been way hectic, but will slow down soon :o)

Chris

The Grateful Dead

Hey, Duane!

Caught your show today for the first time since moving back to the NW after a 33 year exile in Wyoming. In early 1969 (40 years ago!), I was a senior at Columbia River High in Vancouver-new the year before from Connecticut-and not allowed to driver over to Portland after dark. My girlfriend really wanted to go to a concert at this place I'd never heard of to see two bands I'd never heard of. Her Mom consented to drive she, I and her younger sister over and pick us up afterward. Great concert, great bands, great venue-though as a suburban teen, I was a bit shocked by the older hippies and some of their behavior. We, as minors, got kicked out about 10 or 10:30, but it was a memorable evening. The Grateful Dead and the Quicksilver Messenger Service at The Crystal Ballroom!

Enjoyed your show, and will catch it again. Thanks, Beau in Vancouver

Matt's Birthday today!!!!!!!!!

When I spoke with you I did not know it was your special LIFE Day!!!! Wish you peace, joy and good vibes for your DAY and beyond!! Namaste' Sheri Hoffman (your pesky cd addict). A very Happy BirthDAY and many more to come!!
