Rosie McGee, Dancing with the Dead

Later October is simply lousy with tremendous Grateful Dead shows and at this point, it's very much a toss up as to what I'll play.  68?  72?  74?  76?  77?  78?  83?  89?  90?  91?  Tune in to know.

Plus I'll interview Rosie McGee, author of Dancing with the Dead, her new e-book largely about her life (1964-74) connected to The Grateful Dead and specifically Phil Lesh, her boyfriend from 1965-69. Learn where her name comes from (not birth), how the liner photos for Live Dead were shot, just how much fun Rancho Olompali was and much more.

Tune in for a great show. Featuring a special acoustic show that the Grateful Dead played for alter-abled children at the Mill Valley Recreation Center. Apparently they were opening for Santa Claus. The date of the show is 12.6.80 and Betty just set up mics to record since there wasn't a PA.

We'll also visit the 5.19.74 from the Memorial Coliseum. If you don't know this show, be sure to listen, because it's got some great music.

Also playing some Widespread Panic and whatever grabs my attention.

Hope you'll tune in.

Featuring Cody's Wheel live in studio.

As it's a transitional weekend, we're trying something different on Unbroken Chain this month:  LIVE MUSIC!

Cody's Wheel is headlining the upcoming 3-night Prankster's Ball at the Bobwhite Theater following the (now sold out) Furthur shows and will play about an hour in the middle of this week's show. Count on hearing some cool non-GD stuff.

And as a prelude to my shift during our October 6th Grateful Dead Marathon, I'll also feature some Grateful Dead from transitional times.

Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on his new Smithsonian Collection of the world's music

program date:
Sat, 10/15/2011

Most of you are familiar with Mickey Hart for his decades of work as one of The Grateful Dead's drummers.

But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?

Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.

And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead &  Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.

You can freely download 10 files and stream 25 others from the Collection and watch a behind-the-scenes tour of Smithsonian Folkways with Mickey.

Hiya, Hiya, Hiya Kids!

Well! Another 12 Hour Grateful Dead Marathon is officially behind us! Wow! What a good night! I am here to tell you about what happened between 3:00 and 9:00 PM P.S.T.  After Alicia's fine 3 hour set of "Attack Of The Killer Audience Tapes", Mathew took the chair for a rousing Jerry Band fest. Starting with Garcia Band 3-6-76 Seattle Washington, also a Killer Audience Tape, and ending with an ultra rare reading of Moonlight Mile. After that, we were treated to some Good Ol' Grateful Dead featuring Pig Pen. Just when you think you've heard it all, up pops something like April 1974 Marin County Bluegrass Festival. These selections were The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with Jerry Garcia sitting in! Next up was a strong vintage of 1971 Good Lovin. And for the center piece of his segment, Pittsburgh Pa. Civic Arena was well represented. Matt closed his set with soulfull Jerry Garcia Band cut "Who Was John?" from 03-06-76.

Well! What was I to do live up to that? Sheesh! We started my set off with two cuts from the first set of Hampton, Virgina (Yes! The Warlocks Shows!) 10-08-89 . Next stop for Begonia Studios Presents was Normal, Illinois April 24, 1978 for a major portion of the second set. What to do next?....We returned to The Hampton Rhodes Coliseum, Va. 10-9-89 for the now legendary second set breakout of Dark Star (Last time played 7-13-84!). We surfed that wave all the way up to Drumz. And that is how it went down. But it wasn't over yet! Andrew took the chair for the late show. You'll find his set list independant of this one on Grateful Dead And Friends / Playlists / Andrew Geller.  See you on May 29th! (If not sooner!) I'll try to get some pictures of the marathon up soon!

Despite a plethora of worthy aniversary shows today, and even the fact that we're going to 1983, I've picked a couple of other shows to pull from today.  On 4/13/83 the boys were in Vermont for their second of only four shows in that state.  A couple weeks later it's back to the Philadelphia Spectrum, second only to The Winterland as the most frequented venue, for a two night run.  We'll hear part of the 26th.

4/13/83 - Patrick Gymnasium, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT

Hi All!

Welcome to the second time in a row Begonia Studios Presents has been broadcasted on the 27th of the month! This was a very special month for the Grateful Dead and family here in the Great Northwest! March 7th saw the Kingfish reunion at The Goodfoot lounge on S.E. Stark in Portland, and a Prankster oriented "Acid Test" was held at The Mt. Tabor Theater on S.E. Hawthorne on the same night! This was of course just a little warm up for what was to happen the next night at The Portland Memorial Coliseum. We saw "Furthur", The latest attempt to describe the undescribable make a stop here. One big noticable change for this band is the introduction of John Kadlecik of Dark Star Orchestra (Jerry Slot).  We were fortunately able to get a good copy of the show, and we were able play the entire first set plus the first two songs of the second set for this weeks instalment of Grateful Dead and Friends. Judging by the volume and content of the phone calls recieved in the air room, I would say that everyone was pumped to get to either re-hear this show, or like myself, hear the show for the first time.  (I wasn't able to go this time)  We started the show with three cuts deadicated to my three Grandsons (!) Ethan, Kyle, and Carter.  A Horse Named Bill and Teddy Bear's Picnic from Garcia and Grisman's Not For Kids Only, and Monkey And The Engineer from the 1981 release Reckoning. Next we heard a cut from The Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco 11-19-66. A rippin' Cold Rain And Snow. At this point, My partner in crime Tom Chiles and I settled in for a very well played first set of Grateful Dead Music. The set list will prove my point!  Don't forget about our 12 hour Grateful Dead Marathon on May first 12:00 noon till 12:00 midnight. It is a "Listener Request" marathon, so send in your requests to kboodeadshow@gmail.com SOON! See you next month, and we'll finish Furthur 03-08-10!!

Today's show featured much of one night out of seven at the Academy of Music in New York City, in a run that were final 'rehearsals' for the soon-to-be (epic) tour of Europe.  Two other nights (28th & 25th) from this same run were compiled into Dick Picks 30, so you know there's something about this batch of shows, the only ones ever at this venue.

This show began with two nice tunes from the famous Keystone 7-10-73 in which from two shows a live album was culled from.  This period is arguably Garcia's peak period as a guitar player in which he was playing at a very high level with three totally different bands!!  The 'blues' jam exemplefied how alot of the songs were born from with the "Blues For Allah" album, long open ended jams leading to a structured tune.  The 5-15-70 is another fine example of 1970 GD and is dedicated to the memory of Ron McKernan(AKA Pigpen) in which 3/8 is the 37 year anniversary of his passing and ironically, the same day as the Furthur show at the Coliseum.  See ya' next month!!

I always listen to your dead program on sat!

Great!

Solo Jerry At Passaic, NJ

Hey there Sun Lee/ GD&F DJ's...

First, thanks for volunteering. KBOO is the best, thanks to all you wonderful volunteers.

Second, I wanted to make a new comment, this somehow seems to be a reply. Whoops! My skills at these things are pretty slim, my apologies....

Third and main point: I LOVED the (solo acoustic) Jerry set last week, but when I clicked on the link in the PLAYLISTS tab, it played another (GD electric) set. Did I do something wrong? Or perhaps the link is wrong?

I'd love to have access to the Jerry set. Please advise!

Thanks & happy new year to all....

Play more GRATEFUL DEAD dammit!

 Hey Sun,

How many GD songs did you play today performed by the Grateful Dead? I counted four (five if you include Hey Jude.). Play more GD man, it's called the "Grateful Dead and Friends" not "Bands who wish they were the Grateful Dead."

I like the show and I like KBOO but I (and most of my friends who also listen) want to hear the GRATEFUL DEAD, not Furthur, not Widespread Panic, or some local jam band. GRATEFUL DEAD, more please. We don't want to hear other bands playing Grateful Dead songs (Widespread Panic) but the actual GD playing GD music.

Thanks.

Rodrigo

GD marathon

I'd like to request some shows for the GD marathon this weekend. I'd love to hear 12-31-83 Civic Aud  and/or  8-28-82 Veneta OCF grounds. Do you have the SBD's from the Further shows from Oakland w/ John Kadlecik. -thanks, Jakester, Vancouver, WA

Saturday 8/22/09

Duane, sorry I missed your email/show. Perhaps we can schedule another time to do it. Life has been way hectic, but will slow down soon :o)

Chris

The Grateful Dead

Hey, Duane!

Caught your show today for the first time since moving back to the NW after a 33 year exile in Wyoming. In early 1969 (40 years ago!), I was a senior at Columbia River High in Vancouver-new the year before from Connecticut-and not allowed to driver over to Portland after dark. My girlfriend really wanted to go to a concert at this place I'd never heard of to see two bands I'd never heard of. Her Mom consented to drive she, I and her younger sister over and pick us up afterward. Great concert, great bands, great venue-though as a suburban teen, I was a bit shocked by the older hippies and some of their behavior. We, as minors, got kicked out about 10 or 10:30, but it was a memorable evening. The Grateful Dead and the Quicksilver Messenger Service at The Crystal Ballroom!

Enjoyed your show, and will catch it again. Thanks, Beau in Vancouver

Matt's Birthday today!!!!!!!!!

When I spoke with you I did not know it was your special LIFE Day!!!! Wish you peace, joy and good vibes for your DAY and beyond!! Namaste' Sheri Hoffman (your pesky cd addict). A very Happy BirthDAY and many more to come!!
