Grateful Dead

I've got a great show lined up for you. We'll kick things off with some old classic Grateful Dead from '69, with a nice St.Stephen>The Eleven. Then I'll feature a few more Dead tracks.

Then we'll move onto a tribute to jazz, since Dave Brubeck passed away this week. As many of you may know that jazz has had a huge influence on the Grateful Dead and bands that have followed in their footsteps. I'll be playing jazzy cuts from Jerry/Merle, String Cheese Incident with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Phish and Stanton Moore.

We'll also be giving away tickets as per usual.

Hope you tune in.

Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on his new Smithsonian Collection of the world's music

program date:
Sat, 10/15/2011

Most of you are familiar with Mickey Hart for his decades of work as one of The Grateful Dead's drummers.

But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?

Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.

And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead &  Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.

You can freely download 10 files and stream 25 others from the Collection and watch a behind-the-scenes tour of Smithsonian Folkways with Mickey.

With an incredible luck of the draw, with the Blues Festival moving the entire collective up one week in programming, I got the opportunity to do a show for Jerry Garcia's Birthday, which falls on the 1st of August. After a little bit of fun and frivolity, we finished some past buisness by playing the remainder of Madison Square Garden 09-09-91 SBD. At this point, we aired a beautiful "Killer Audience Tape" of The Jerry Garcia Band at The Orpheum Theater in Boston Ma. 12-02-77 Early Show. This has always been a favorite of mine. I was given a cassette copy of a bootleg album called "The Grateful Dead Featuring Jerry Garcia Boston Ma. 12-02-77. (Bootleg albums were famous for not getting it right). This was a fine performance of a very up show! Content worthy of playing for everyone in the family! We were joined about midway through the program by Scotty Gillan from The Jerry Garcia Birthday Band to talk about Jerry's Birthday at The McMenamens Edgefield. This is where the J.G.B.B. got it's start, playing sets every year on Jerry's Birthday. Boy! What a fabulous weekend for DeadHeads! Saturday night at the Tonic Lounge, Tom Wright brought his Garcia cover band "Cats Down Under The Stars" in for a Jerry Garcia Band hoedown! (Tom also fronts "Ramblin' Rose", the Grateful Dead cover band). And then the Garcia Birthday thing at The Edgefield! (With The Freak Mountain Ramblers putting the cap on a perfect day!). Tom Chiles is taking a little time off to get some things taken care of, and we hope he will be back very soon! I'll be on the air again August 28th. Hmmmmm, what to play?

Well, Suprise, Suprise! Here I am again filling in for Matt Smith's Rolling Thunder Review!! Today (June 5th) is his Daughter Kelly's 9th Birthday! Happy Birthday Kelly! We began the festivities with some material from the 2-26-90 show from Oakland Coliseum Arena. A hilarious "We Want Phil" episode with Mr. Lesh delivering the goods with Tom Thumb Blues, followed by Music Never Stopped > Don't Ease Me In. We continued this very special day by fulfilling a promise made on my last show to complete the 7-18-76 Orpheum Theater show Set 2. We heard Sugar Magnolia, and the encore Johnny B. Good. It should be noted that J.B.Goode is omited from many of the F.M. broadcasts in circulation these days, so that makes the encore a rarity! At this point we began a nice set 2 sbd from Grateful Dead's East Coast hangout, Madison Square Garden on 9-9-91. By this time we were joined by my Friend, and Cohort Tom Chiles. Always a pleasure to have Tom in the room! We started set two, and made it all the way to Drums > Space before running out of time. We then turned the chair over to Rasheed. Matt will be in the chair on June 26th in place of me, and Alicia Olson and I will be anchoring the Portland Waterfront Blues Festival on July 4th one week later. Commander Cody will be headlining that day before the fireworks! We'll see you on the fourth!

Well, here we are again! My third time on the air this month! That can only mean one thing, Membership Drive!!!  Thank you all that became a KBOO member during this membership cycle! You rock! Well it's nice to settle back in to the regular programming. We started this episode of Begonia Studios Presents with 2 cuts from J.G.B.'s last show at Portland Meadows Horse Racing Track 8-8-93. Then we chose to get the Vista Cruiser for a romp through one of the better shows of 1976 in my opinion. Orpheum Theater, S.F. 7-18-76.  We started out in the 2nd set at Lazy Lightning, and stopped much later at Stella Blue. Sugar Magnolia, and the Johnny B. Goode encore will come on my next show in June. As usual, our good friend Tom Chiles was in the room with us, but chose not to be vocal this time. We closed out the show with one more cut from J.G.B. 8-8-93. See ya next month!

I love dead

I always listen to your dead program on sat!

Great!

Solo Jerry At Passaic, NJ

Hey there Sun Lee/ GD&F DJ's...

First, thanks for volunteering. KBOO is the best, thanks to all you wonderful volunteers.

Second, I wanted to make a new comment, this somehow seems to be a reply. Whoops! My skills at these things are pretty slim, my apologies....

Third and main point: I LOVED the (solo acoustic) Jerry set last week, but when I clicked on the link in the PLAYLISTS tab, it played another (GD electric) set. Did I do something wrong? Or perhaps the link is wrong?

I'd love to have access to the Jerry set. Please advise!

Thanks & happy new year to all....

Play more GRATEFUL DEAD dammit!

 Hey Sun,

How many GD songs did you play today performed by the Grateful Dead? I counted four (five if you include Hey Jude.). Play more GD man, it's called the "Grateful Dead and Friends" not "Bands who wish they were the Grateful Dead."

I like the show and I like KBOO but I (and most of my friends who also listen) want to hear the GRATEFUL DEAD, not Furthur, not Widespread Panic, or some local jam band. GRATEFUL DEAD, more please. We don't want to hear other bands playing Grateful Dead songs (Widespread Panic) but the actual GD playing GD music.

Thanks.

Rodrigo

GD marathon

I'd like to request some shows for the GD marathon this weekend. I'd love to hear 12-31-83 Civic Aud  and/or  8-28-82 Veneta OCF grounds. Do you have the SBD's from the Further shows from Oakland w/ John Kadlecik. -thanks, Jakester, Vancouver, WA

Duane, sorry I missed your email/show. Perhaps we can schedule another time to do it. Life has been way hectic, but will slow down soon :o)

Chris

The Grateful Dead

Hey, Duane!

Caught your show today for the first time since moving back to the NW after a 33 year exile in Wyoming. In early 1969 (40 years ago!), I was a senior at Columbia River High in Vancouver-new the year before from Connecticut-and not allowed to driver over to Portland after dark. My girlfriend really wanted to go to a concert at this place I'd never heard of to see two bands I'd never heard of. Her Mom consented to drive she, I and her younger sister over and pick us up afterward. Great concert, great bands, great venue-though as a suburban teen, I was a bit shocked by the older hippies and some of their behavior. We, as minors, got kicked out about 10 or 10:30, but it was a memorable evening. The Grateful Dead and the Quicksilver Messenger Service at The Crystal Ballroom!

Enjoyed your show, and will catch it again. Thanks, Beau in Vancouver

Matt's Birthday today!!!!!!!!!

When I spoke with you I did not know it was your special LIFE Day!!!! Wish you peace, joy and good vibes for your DAY and beyond!! Namaste' Sheri Hoffman (your pesky cd addict). A very Happy BirthDAY and many more to come!!
