But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?
Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.
And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead & Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.
- Title: Former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart on his new Smithsonian Collection of the world's music
- Date: 2011-10-15
- Year: 2011
- Producer: Andrew Geller
- Length: 13:41 minutes (12.53 MB)
- Format: MP3 Mono 44kHz 128Kbps (CBR)
Recorded late May 2011 at KBOO Studios by Andrew Geller. We touch on current events, near-future plans including the grand opening in 2012, some really cool recent contributions and much more.

Greetings Fellow Space Travelers! It only seems like yesterday that we began to play set two of 8-28-82 set 2. Why, it was on August 28th 2010! The 28th Anniversary of the 2nd Decadenal Field Trip at the Country Fairgrounds in Veneta!!! We began the broadcast by ballyhooing the new Grateful Dead Road Trips Vol.3 No.4 featuring Penn State, and Cornell 1980. Me And My Uncle, and Big River got a good workout from the Penn State Recreation Hall 5-6-90. Road Trips are available at WWW.DEAD.NET right now! After the Road Trips Debut, we picked up where we left off on Veneta 82. As a footnote, I have a cool story about last months show. When I got home, I found an email on the WWW.KBOODEADSHOW@GMAIL.Com From Eli Babbs. It seems that somebody called him to tell him that his Dad's (Kenn Babbs) voice was on KBOO on Grateful Dead and Friends. So he tuned in and had a great time listening to the rest of the show. I emailed him back and Mathew and I arranged to meet him and his honey Sandy for a brew or two. Because of that meeting, he agreed to come on Matts show the next week. I hope this won't be the last we see of Eli, and the Pranksters! Anyway, with Tom Chiles and Bill Carver in the passenger seat, we finished 8-28-82 set 2. To fill out the rest of the show, we played 2 songs from the first set of Furthur at Cuthbert Amphitheater in Eugene on 9-16-10. Don't forget Eli Babbs band The Lost Creek Gang will be at the goodfoot Lounge 2845 S.E. Stark (Also Twisted Whistle). It is a 21 and older event, and gets under way at 9:00. Then on the 8th, A benefit will be put on by Garcia Birthday Band for KBOO at the Tonic Lounge at 3100 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Come on out and dance the night away, Support KBOO, and get ready for the 15th Anniversary Grateful Dead 12 hour Marathon on the 9th 12:00 Noon Till Midnight! See you soon!

A hodgepodge leading to the 34th anniversary of Phil G's first GD show...
Today I feature some choice excerpts from a truly monstrous show that ran 4 1/2 hours with three full sets. It also includes the first of only two shows where BOTH the Mind Left Body jam and Spanish jam appeared. The second occurance was nearly three months later (10/17/74), but that time they reversed the order.
China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider, Weather Report Suite, Eyes of the World > China Doll, Truckin' > Mind Left Body jam! > Spanish jam!! > Wharf Rat, Greatest Story Ever Told

With an incredible luck of the draw, with the Blues Festival moving the entire collective up one week in programming, I got the opportunity to do a show for Jerry Garcia's Birthday, which falls on the 1st of August. After a little bit of fun and frivolity, we finished some past buisness by playing the remainder of Madison Square Garden 09-09-91 SBD. At this point, we aired a beautiful "Killer Audience Tape" of The Jerry Garcia Band at The Orpheum Theater in Boston Ma. 12-02-77 Early Show. This has always been a favorite of mine. I was given a cassette copy of a bootleg album called "The Grateful Dead Featuring Jerry Garcia Boston Ma. 12-02-77. (Bootleg albums were famous for not getting it right). This was a fine performance of a very up show! Content worthy of playing for everyone in the family! We were joined about midway through the program by Scotty Gillan from The Jerry Garcia Birthday Band to talk about Jerry's Birthday at The McMenamens Edgefield. This is where the J.G.B.B. got it's start, playing sets every year on Jerry's Birthday. Boy! What a fabulous weekend for DeadHeads! Saturday night at the Tonic Lounge, Tom Wright brought his Garcia cover band "Cats Down Under The Stars" in for a Jerry Garcia Band hoedown! (Tom also fronts "Ramblin' Rose", the Grateful Dead cover band). And then the Garcia Birthday thing at The Edgefield! (With The Freak Mountain Ramblers putting the cap on a perfect day!). Tom Chiles is taking a little time off to get some things taken care of, and we hope he will be back very soon! I'll be on the air again August 28th. Hmmmmm, what to play?
Furthur wrapped up its latest tour a couple of weeks back, and today I'll play excerpts from a couple of shows from early in the tour. They play two nights at the Cuthbert Ampitheater in Eugene in mid-September.
Later in the show we'll also share a really hot post-space from a show I can't provide a good reason for not attending way back when.

Today I'm featuring some practice, and then for-real live Grateful Dead from the mid-70s. The rehearsal date/s are in question for some of the content, with full notes available through the date link. There's numerous rehearsal sessions available on Archive; look in late '67, Fall '71, 1975, early 1983 for starters. Check anytime there was a new member (keys really), new material, or simply an extended touring break.
