But did you know about his work with the Smithsonian Institution, specifically with their Smithsonian Folkways music label?
Well earlier this week, the Smithsonian released the Mickey Hart Collection featuring 25 albums drawn from ‘The World,’ a series Hart curated that incorporated his solo projects, other artists’ productions, and re-releases of out-of-print titles. Six of the twenty-five albums form the “Endangered Music Project,” a collaboration between Mickey Hart and the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, which presents recordings from musical traditions at risk.
And on this week's installment of Grateful Dead & Friends, Mickey joined us live to talk about the Collection, his new band, tour and forthcoming album.

Hello All, and welcome to Portland, Oregon Summer!!! We made all our music selections with summer time in mind. The first selection was "Paint Box" (by Pink Floyd. It has just always reminded me of summer, so I played it!) After that we had a little bit of 1966 (?) tomfoolery with the band. The next cut was a red hot performance of "Summer Time" by Janis Joplin. WOWZERS!!! We spent the rest of the show at The Old Fillmore in San Francisco. Smoakin' Hot performances on July 16,17 1966, and a snippit from 11-19-66. Thanks to all of you that listened, called in, and otherwise shared this Good Ol' Grateful Dead with us at Grateful Dead And Friends! I'll see you all next month!!!
A trip back to the 'comeback' tour today (that's 1976 folks). This weekend that year, the Dead were at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ for a three night run. Great audio exists for the 1st & 3rd nights, the middle is iffy, so we're skipping that night today.

Hello Fellow Space Travelers!!
And welcome to the gateway to the Summer Season at Grateful Dead and Friends! We started off today's show by celebrating the soon arrival of The Moody Blues to Portland on the 3rd of June. We found a nice recording of their show in Tucson, Arizona, and played the first song of the concert, "The Voice". After that juicy cut, we welcomed Scotty from Garcia Birthday Band, and Matt from Twisted Whistle to the studio to tell all the folks about the KBOO Benefit Concert at The Mt. Tabor Theater that very evening! The lineup for the show was Twisted Whistle, Garcia Birthday Band, And The Lost Creek Gang (Eli Babbs and Company. Pranksters!). Also on hand was Zane Kesey and the Furthur Bus!! What a fun night of Music, Dancing, and Hijinx it was! Thank you all so much for your support of KBOO by coming out and taking part in this now traditional event!
We then started a nice soundboard recording of Good Ol' You Know Who, 10-28-85 Atlanta, Georgia Soundboard set 2. With the little time left, We played some nice footage of Jerry Garcia, and Merle Saunders from 7-10-73 Keystone, Berkeley "Merle's Tune" From the 16 track version of the "Live At Keystone" Sessions. I'll see you all again on June 25th, if all goes as to plan. Take care!!
