GAI SHANXI AND HER SISTERS tells the story of one woman’s brutal ordeal as a “comfort woman” for the Japanese Army during World War II. Hou Dong-E, known as “Gai Shanxi,” the fairest woman in China’s Shanxi province, was one of the many women abducted from their villages to be sexually enslaved by Japanese soldiers stationed nearby. Fifty years later, she joined other women throughout Asia to seek justice and reparations, but she died before her demands were answered.


The Clinton Street Theater Sex Worker series celebrates the accomplishments of sex worker film and video makers by screening relevant works about sex workers and the sex industries from around the world.

The films focus on sex workers' rights; organizing efforts and working conditions for strippers; global sex work and sex work as a labor issue on the international agenda; sex workers as artists; queer sex workers; sex work and gender identities; portraits of strippers, prostitutes, doms, madams and more.

BACKGROUND
On May 2, 1973, former Black Panthers Sundiata Acoli, Assata Shakur and Zayd Shakur were ambushed and attacked by state troopers on the New Jersey Turnpike. Assata was wounded and Zayd was killed. During the gun battle a state trooper was shot and killed in the crossfire. Sundiata was tried in an environment of mass hysteria and convicted.

The Ghosts of Tonkin

August 2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the Gulf of Tonkin resolution.  Bellingham TheatreWorks is touring a 60-minute theatre piece called The Ghosts of Tonkin, a drama about Wayne Morse and the origins of the Vietnam War. 

This award-winning play dramatizes the behind-the-scenes story of how seemingly well-intentioned public officials brought about one of the most devastating chapters in the history of the United States: The Vietnam War.  The Vietnam War devastated two countries, toppled the President of the United States, and killed two million people.  And one man tried to stop it before it began, Oregon’s Senator Wayne Morse.

This September, World leaders are gathering in New York City for a UN summit on climate change. Across the country, from New York to Portland, OR, the People’s Climate March will show that we stand together, demanding a better world for ourselves and for generations to come.
