Tar Sands Megaload Blockade at Port of Umatilla Oregon on December 1

program:
Evening News
program date:
Mon, 12/02/2013
Tar Sands Megaload Blockade at Port of Umatilla, Oregon on 12-02-2013 from KBOO PM News
Climate activists blocked a controversial shipment last night, forcing contractors to reschedule the Megaload’s departure from the Port of Umatilla in Oregon.
The equipment, a nine-hundred thousand pound water purifier twenty-two feet wide, eighteen feet tall and three-hundred and seventy-six feet in length was met by a diverse group of regional activists.
This week’s protest was larger than a similar protest last week as news of the shipment has spread throughout the region.
Similar loads sparked major protests moving through Idaho and Montana including a blockade by the Nez Pierce tribe in August.
KBOO reporter Ross Freeman Levin spoke with Michael Gaskill from the group Rising Tide, who was at the protest.

Portland Police Officer Accused of Mistreatment and Racial Profiling is Promoted to Sergeant

Evening News
program date:
Thu, 08/08/2013

Portland police officer Todd Tackett, who the city's Citizen Review Committee found last night was disparaging to an African American man, was promoted this afternoon to sergeant.

Last night's ruling was the result of a complaint filed by 62-year-old Floyd McCorvey last summer that Tackett disrespected and racially profiled him when he falsely accused him of being a pimp and a crackhead and referred to his low-income housing before citing him for jaywalking.

The Portland Police Bureau's initial investigation into the incident found that allegations that Tackett was disrespectful to McCorvey were "unproven."

Furthermore, the city's Independent Police Review division dismissed the part of McCorvey's complaint that alleged racial discrimination.

The volunteer-based Citizen Review Committee, which hears appeals to bureau rulings on citizen complaints, unsuccessfully urged an investigation of Mr. McCorvey's racial discrimination complaint earlier this year.

Their 4-2 ruling last night pertained to the allegation that Tackett was disparaging and discourteous to McCorvey, and recommended the police bureau changed their ruling on that charge from "unproven" to "sustained."

KBOO's Jenn Chavez got more details on the CRC ruling from Portland Copwatch's Dan Handelman.
