28 Timber Sales Cancelled in Oregon Coast Marbled Murrelet Habitat

A coalition of Oregon environmental groups claimed victory after they reached a settlement with the state of Oregon, resulting in the cancellation of 28 timber sales in the Elliott, Clatsop and Tillamook State Forests. These lands include crucial habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet. Agencies Debate Mercury Contamination in Oregon's McKenzie River

The state Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is considering adding the McKenzie River, which supplies water to the city of Eugene, to a list of mercury-contaminated waters it will submit to the EPA. The Eugene Water and Electric Board (EWEB) is disputing the DEQ's methodology and standards. KBOO's Sam Bouman spoke to Karla Urbanowicz of the DEQ's water quality assessment program for more on mercury standards and what they could mean for the future of the McKenzie--long considered one of the state's most pristine rivers--and those who rely on its water and wildlife.

Sharon Maxwell In The Running For City Council

The position for city commissioner is open, and incumbent NICK FISH will be in the running for re-election.
Portland native SHARON MAXWELL is running against NICK FISH to serve the community and gave a press conference TUESDAY at Portland Community College-Cascade campus to announce her running for district 2. Ballots to vote on the canidates will be mailed out on April 30th and the ballot votes will be counted on May 20, 2014.

ACLU Weights in on Federally Mandated Police Reform

In 2012 the U.S. Department of Justice found that Portland police uses excessive force against people with perceived mental illness.

Since then, the city, the police, the feds, and the Albina Ministerial Alliance have been working out a settlement agreement covering reforms to police policies, training and oversight.

Police Sweep Camps in Portland

Business Proposed to Build Solar Recumbent Bicycles in Portland

A novel kind of transportation called the ‘ELF’ is coming to Portland, Oregon. The name comes from electric, light and fun. The ELF is a new style of recumbent bicycle with a solar panel shell surrounding it. Inventor and company founder Rob Cotter’s business includes plans to build the bikes where they are sold. American Psychological Association Drops Complaint Against Guantanamo "Torture Psychologist"

The American Psychological Association has dropped a formal complaint against John Leso, a psychologist at the US's Guantanamo prison, who designed and oversaw torture techniques used against prisoners. Government Panel Calls for an End to the NSA's Metadata Collection

The Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board issued a report today that called for an end to the collection of phone call metadata--who called who, when, and for how long--by the National Security Agency, or NSA. Robin Ryan spoke to Zeke Johnson, Director of Amnesty International's Security and Human Rights Campaign, about the report, which he believes signals a shift in political will towards shutting down intrusive surveillance of American citizens.
