Ferguson Speak Out

program:
Evening News
program date:
Thu, 11/20/2014
Clergy and youth activists will publicly call on media and policymakers to focus on the real, deeper issues that sparked protest after the killing of teen Michael Brown and will once again be front and center should Officer Darren Wilson be acquitted by a grand jury.

The panel, organized by PICO National Network, will also highlight the broader problems surrounding the U.S. justice system and a way forward for the grieving Ferguson community. Rev. Michael McBride, director of PICO’s Live Free Campaign, will moderate the panel. “While media and politicians like Gov. Nixon are focused on the threat of violent protests, looting and rioting, they are still not addressing the root of the problem – a broken justice and political system that systematically leaves communities of color devalued and disenfranchised,” McBride said. “Many communities of color have lived in a state of emergency for decades; they’ve been oppressed and hurting for decades. It’s long past time we start talking about the positive power of the young people in this community who are searching for a way forward for Ferguson, for justice and against the dehumanization of people of color."

Around 13,000 contested ballots WERE NOT COUNTED in the November 4th election in Oregon.  Voters have until WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 19th to fix any problems with contested ballots.

A recount is automatically triggered if the margin on any item is within 4,000 votes.  This could have an impact on Measure 92, where the margin between No votes and Yes votes is around 7,500 at last count.

KBOO spoke with Tony Green of the Oregon Secretary of State's office for more on the 13,000 contested ballots.

ARE YOU ON THE LIST? - The Statesman-Journal has made it easy to search the full list of contested voters.

If you ARE on the list, contact your County Election Office before Wednesday the 19th to make sure your vote gets counted.

Colorado students challenge conservative school board

program:
Evening News
program date:
Mon, 11/10/2014
A dozen students in Colorado were kicked out of a local school board meeting for protesting what they are calling the censorship of history.  The conservative school board in Jefferson County Colorado had been considering a measure that would limit history classes, including Advanced Placement History in high schools, from learning about certain parts of U-S history.

The school board stated that all books and materials in the classroom should promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free enterprise system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights.

In addition, all educational Materials should quote “not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law. Instructional materials should present positive aspects of the United States and its heritage.”

A dozen students protesting this policy were escorted out of last night’s school board meeting while reciting the pledge of allegiance and holding up books.
Ashlyn Artemis Maher, one of the students who engaged in the protest, spoke with KBOO about her decision to protest.
