Hawaii Super Ferry will be used by military

program:
Evening News
program date:
Tue, 09/04/2007

The US Coast Guard yesterday created a military security zone in Hawai’i’s Nawiliwili (NA-WILLIE-WILLIE) Harbor.  Hundreds of people protested in the Harbor Monday, angry at the plans for the new Superferry in Hawai’i.

The Superferry has stirred controversy in Hawai’i because it has begun service without an environmental impact statement.  However, Hawai’i’s Supreme Court ruled Friday that the ferry must undergo an environmental assessment.

Rich Hoeppner is a founder of the Superferry Impact group, and President of People for the preservation of Kaua’i .

Some protesters were also concerned about the Superferry’s possible military uses.  The ferry has joined a program allowing the military to use it during wars and national emergencies.

Breaching the security zone around the Superferry can be punished by arrest, possible ten year prison sentences, and ten thousand dollar fines.

It took days - often weeks - for governmental agencies and relief organizations to respond to the disaster in the Gulf.

But residents - in the middle of the disaster - didn’t have a choice, and acted immediately.   While countless lives were saved by these first responders, their heroic actions were rarely reported by mainstream media.

KBOO’s Marc de Giere filed this report on one neighborhood in New Orleans that wasn’t going to wait for help to arrive.

Immigrations and Customs Enforecement, also known as ICE, arrested Elvira Arellano and deported her on Sunday.
Elvira has been a leader in the immigrant rights movement and a mother of a ten year old.  Last night, Elvira found her influence once again rippling across the nation as eight interfaith groups came together in a number of cities nationwide in solidarity.
One of these groups met in front of the ICE building in Portland yesterday and Kboo News Reporter Michael
Ianello (Eye-Uh-Nello) was there and brings us the story.
