4th Annual Sunshine Week: For Freedom of Information and Open Government

This week marks the 4th annual "Sunshine Week", led by the American Society of Newspaper Editors.

The focus of the week is to "shed light" on government secrecy, and to call for open government.

Housing Activists Stand up for Accountability in New Orleans

The City council of New Orleans voted last night to criminalize homelessness -- just two months after deciding to demolish thousands of undamaged, affordable public housing units.

Housing activists have called the latest move an outrage that targets the poorest survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

Six activists were arrested yesterday at Saint Bernard housing project, and dozens more marched on the home of Louisiana Senator David Vitter.

Vitter has been responsible for single-handedly blocking a piece of legislation in the U-S Senate that would provide a one-to-one replacement for every demolished public housing unit

 

Proposal for One-Stop Domestic Violence Shelter in PDX

In this morning's City Council meeting in Portland, the council voted to accept the Feasibility Study for a One-Stop Domestic Violence Service Center.

Day of Action Portland on War Fifth Year Anniversary

In Portland today demonstrators conducted a Day of Action against the Iraq War, on the fifth anniversary of the war.

These demonstrations took place at three downtown sites – Terry Schrunk plaza, the World Trade Center and the Old Federal Courthouse.

One of the events held today to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq was a protest called "Funk the War".

That group targeted what they term "war profiteers" here in Portland, including Wells Fargo.

Restorative Listening Project: Forum on Gentrification in North Portland

Last night the Restorative Listening Project held an open public forum on gentrification at the First AME Zion Church in north Portland.   

The project attempts to address some of the effects of gentrification and development with open communication within neighborhoods.

Malcolm Chaddock is a member with the Veterans for Peace chapter here in Portland. He went to Maryland last week to attend the Winter Soldier hearings that took place last weekend in Springwater, Maryland.
